Registered Nurse Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a registered nurse in New York?
To become a registered nurse in New York, you must graduate from an accredited nursing program, pass the NCLEX-RN, and obtain licensure through the New York State Education Department's Office of the Professions. New York accepts applications through its online licensing portal and also participates in endorsement for nurses already licensed in other states. An Associate Degree in Nursing qualifies you to sit for the NCLEX, though many New York hospital systems prefer or require a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
How much do registered nurses make in New York?
Registered nurses in New York earn a median of about $109,440 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $79,760 for the lowest 10% to over $157,090 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire registered nurses in New York?
Employers hiring registered nurses in New York right now include Trinity Health, Newark Wayne Community Hospital, and Northwell Health, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's large integrated health systems and academic medical centers drive a substantial share of statewide openings, with consistent hiring across inpatient, outpatient, and specialty care settings.
Which New York cities have the most registered nurse jobs?
The cities with the most registered nurse openings in New York are Syracuse, Rochester, and Brooklyn. New York City dominates the distribution because of its dense concentration of major academic medical centers, specialty hospitals, and community health networks, while Buffalo and Albany anchor strong regional markets supported by established health systems serving western and upstate New York populations.
Are there remote registered nurse jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're rare. Registered nursing is primarily a hands-on, bedside role that requires physical presence with patients. About 1% of registered nurse openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and most of those positions are in utilization review, case management, or telephone triage rather than direct patient care.
How can I get hired as a registered nurse in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to a nurse residency program, which major New York systems including Northwell Health, NewYork-Presbyterian, and NYC Health and Hospitals run specifically for new graduates. These structured programs provide supervised clinical hours across medical-surgical and step-down units before placement. Candidates who hold an active New York State RN license and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing are most competitive, and lateral experience as a patient care technician or licensed practical nurse within a New York facility can also open doors to staff RN roles.
