Physician Assistant Jobs in Montana: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a physician assistant in Montana?
To become a physician assistant in Montana, you must graduate from an ARC-PA accredited program, pass the PANCE examination administered by the NCCPA, and apply for licensure through the Montana Board of Medical Examiners. The board requires proof of graduation, NCCPA certification, and a completed application before you can practice. Montana does not offer a temporary or provisional PA license, so full licensure must be in place before starting work.
How much do physician assistants make in Montana?
Physician assistants in Montana earn a median of about $141,470 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $112,200 for the lowest 10% to over $165,560 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire physician assistants in Montana?
Companies currently hiring physician assistants in Montana include Billings Clinic, Empower Psychological Services, PLLC, and Bozeman Health, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Which Montana cities have the most physician assistant jobs?

Billings leads as the state's largest city and home to major systems like Billings Clinic and St. Vincent Healthcare, while Missoula and Great Falls concentrate openings through their respective regional medical centers and network of affiliated clinics serving large surrounding rural populations.
Are there remote physician assistant jobs in Montana?
Yes, but they're rare. About 8% of physician assistant openings tied to Montana are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting the hands-on, patient-facing nature of most PA roles. The parts of physician assistant work most suited to remote arrangements are telehealth follow-up visits, chronic disease management, and behavioral health consultation through Montana's expanding telehealth programs.
How can I get hired as a physician assistant in Montana with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path for new physician assistants in Montana is applying directly to new-graduate postings at large health systems like Billings Clinic and Providence St. Patrick Hospital, both of which regularly hire new graduates into supervised primary care and hospitalist roles. Completing clinical rotations at Montana facilities builds local relationships that often lead to direct offers. Candidates who hold an active Montana license from the Board of Medical Examiners and current NCCPA certification before graduation stand out in a competitive new-grad pool.
