Electrical Engineer Jobs in San Diego: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a electrical engineer job in San Diego?
San Diego's strongest hiring is in defense and aerospace, wireless and RF engineering, and semiconductor design, with employers clustered in Sorrento Valley, Kearny Mesa, and the UTC area. Candidates who hold active security clearances or have hands-on RF, FPGA, or embedded systems experience stand out here. Targeting defense contractors and communications hardware firms directly gives you the best shot in this market.
Which companies hire electrical engineers in San Diego?
San Diego electrical engineer roles are posted by Northrop Grumman, WSP, and Leidos and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. The local market skews heavily toward defense prime contractors, wireless hardware companies, and mid-size semiconductor firms with engineering centers in North San Diego.
Are there remote electrical engineer jobs in San Diego?
Yes, but remote availability is limited for most electrical engineering work since the role typically involves lab work, hardware testing, and on-site collaboration. About 36% of electrical engineer openings tied to San Diego are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, and those positions tend to be in systems architecture, CAD design, or technical program management rather than hands-on hardware roles.
How can I get a electrical engineer job in San Diego with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in San Diego is through internships or junior engineer roles at defense contractors and communications hardware companies, many of which run structured early-career programs. Entry-level positions in test engineering, PCB layout support, and lab technician roles are common stepping stones locally. A security clearance, even at the Secret level, dramatically improves your competitiveness with San Diego's defense-heavy employer base.
Which industries hire the most electrical engineers in San Diego?
San Diego electrical engineer roles concentrate in Electronics & Hardware and Consulting & Professional Services, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. San Diego's large defense contracting presence, proximity to naval installations, and established wireless technology ecosystem drive steady demand across those sectors year-round.
