Electrical Engineer Jobs in San Francisco: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a electrical engineer job in San Francisco?
Focus on the sectors that drive San Francisco hiring: cleantech and energy storage, medical devices in Mission Bay, and hardware startups in SoMa and the Dogpatch. Employers here weight hands-on experience with power electronics, embedded systems, or PCB design heavily. A portfolio of completed projects, familiarity with California's energy grid standards, and connections through local IEEE Bay Area chapter events give candidates a clear edge over equally credentialed applicants.
Which companies hire electrical engineers in San Francisco?
Employers hiring electrical engineers in San Francisco right now include Redwood Materials, Affiliated Engineers, and PAE Consulting Engineers, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. San Francisco's hiring base skews toward hardware-forward startups, medical device companies, and clean energy firms rather than large legacy defense contractors, which tend to concentrate further south on the Peninsula.
Are there remote electrical engineer jobs in San Francisco?
Yes, though remote availability is limited for electrical engineers because most roles involve lab work, hardware testing, or on-site commissioning. About 19% of electrical engineer openings tied to San Francisco are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, with most flexibility concentrated in systems engineering, power analysis, and technical program management functions that require less hands-on bench time.
How can I get a electrical engineer job in San Francisco with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in San Francisco is targeting hardware startups in SoMa and the Dogpatch, which hire junior engineers and electrical engineering interns more readily than established firms. Entry roles such as test engineer, PCB layout technician, and systems validation engineer serve as common footholds. Building a visible project portfolio, contributing to open-source hardware initiatives, and attending Bay Area Maker Faire or local IEEE events accelerate hiring conversations considerably.
Which industries hire the most electrical engineers in San Francisco?
The sectors hiring the most electrical engineers in San Francisco are Consulting & Professional Services, Technology & Software, and Construction & Real Estate, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. San Francisco's concentration of cleantech investment, UCSF-adjacent medical device development in Mission Bay, and a dense hardware startup ecosystem make those sectors consistently the strongest sources of local electrical engineering demand.
