This position is a tiered position. Incumbents will have a position level assigned based on their skills andexperience, and in alignment with position development plans. Position placement is at Amtrak’s sole andabsolute discretion.
SUMMARY OF DUTIES:
The Sr. Field Engineer assists in the management of the day-to-day operations of the Communication and Signals(C&S) Department. This includes focusing on safe work practices, FRA mandated compliance testing,maintenance, and repairs. Daily tasks will include responsibilities in both the office and the field in all types ofweather conditions to support a 24/7 operation.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Ensures safe work practices are adhered to and Amtrak policies and procedures are enforced.
- Directs the C&S department's resources and responsibilities for all FRA inspection and maintenance activitieswithin the territory.
- Ensures regulatory inspections are compliant with Amtrak policies and the FRA CFR.
- Expert level knowledge and experience in all facets of Signal inspection, maintenance, and constructionincluding but not limited to the installation of new Signal construction, micro lock conversion and supportingnew track infrastructure projects. Observes field activities to ensure conformance with safety protocols.
- Participates in the planning and implementation of both maintenance and state of good repair programs forthe C&S Department.
- Communicates with the system design office and provides technical support in the field for all maintenanceand construction activities.
- Remains available 24/7 to respond to Infrastructure needs, service disruptions, investigations, and discipline.
- Participates in Amtrak’s audit processes.
- Must have knowledge of current collective bargaining agreements (ARASA and BRS).
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or Construction Management or equivalent work experience and training in position of similar capacity,
- Minimum of 6 years of experience.
- In lieu of education, a minimum of 10 years of relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education, training, and work experience.
- Must be qualified in: Amtrak’s RWP, NORAC, AMT2, AMT 23/ 27.
- Demonstrated leadership experience and ability to interface with all levels of employees, and external andinternal customers.
- Demonstrated knowledge and applied experience in railroad operations, operating rules, and divisionaloperating processes and procedures.
- Demonstrated knowledge of project management including scheduling, budgeting, estimating, andcoordinating efforts with other technical disciplines.
- Must be proficient with MS Office, creating spreadsheets, presentations, memorandums, and utilizing otherapplications to perform job functions.
- Must have a valid driver’s license.
- Must possess strategic and tactical skills required for planning and executing complex project work.
- Strong leadership required, encompassing effective communication, motivation, and team building/teamperformance skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Construction Management or equivalent work experience and training in position of similar capacity.

- In lieu of education, a minimum of 12 years of relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education, training, and work experience.
- Master’s Degree in Engineering, Construction Management or equivalent work experience and training in
position of similar capacity with a minimum of 6 years’ experience. - Minimum of 3 years’ experience.
- In lieu of education, a minimum of 7 years of relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of
education, training, and work experience. - Licensed Professional Engineer or ability to acquire.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Combination of Office and field (primary) environment.
- Position is subject to respond to emergencies in all weather conditions 24/7.
- Position is planned to be routinely scheduled on third shift during the overnight.
The salary/hourly range is 110,000 for the Field Engineer and 122,000 for the Sr Field Engineer. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. Depending on an employee’s assigned worksite or location, Amtrak may consider a geo-pay differential to be applied to the employee’s base salary. Amtrak may offer additional incentive and pay programs to recognize and reward our employees, including a short-term incentive bonus based upon factors such as individual and company performance that is commensurate with the level of the position.
