Hardware Engineer Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a hardware engineer in New York?
A bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or a closely related discipline is the standard starting point for hardware engineers in New York. The state does not require a specific hardware engineering license for most industry roles, but engineers who stamp public-facing designs may pursue a Professional Engineer license through the New York State Education Department. Building hands-on lab skills, earning certifications in tools like Altium or Cadence, and completing internships with New York defense or semiconductor employers strengthens candidacy significantly.
How much do hardware engineers make in New York?
Hardware engineers in New York earn a median of about $163,470 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $101,530 for the lowest 10% to over $224,490 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire hardware engineers in New York?
Employers hiring hardware engineers in New York right now include Coherent, Meta, and Amazon, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's hardware engineering market is anchored by defense contractors and semiconductor manufacturers with long-established engineering campuses on Long Island and in the Hudson Valley.
Which New York cities have the most hardware engineer jobs?
New York, Horseheads, and Albany have the most hardware engineer openings in New York. New York City draws the broadest range of employers from consumer electronics startups to large systems integrators, while Long Island's concentration of defense contractors like Northrop Grumman and L3Harris, along with the Hudson Valley's IBM and GlobalFoundries campuses, drives demand well outside the metro core.
Are there remote hardware engineer jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're rare. Hardware engineering involves lab work, prototyping, and hands-on testing that generally requires on-site presence. About 18% of hardware engineer openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those openings tend to concentrate in design review, documentation, and systems architecture tasks that can be handled off-site.
How can I get hired as a hardware engineer in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is an internship or new-graduate associate engineer role with a large New York employer such as IBM, Northrop Grumman, or a Long Island defense contractor, many of which run structured early-career engineering programs. Candidates transitioning from adjacent roles like electrical technician, test engineer, or EE lab assistant have a strong footing. A capstone project, senior design portfolio, or hands-on PCB prototype submitted alongside your application gives hiring managers concrete evidence of ability where a short resume cannot.
Where can I find and apply to hardware engineer jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to hardware engineer jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings tied to the state. Find roles that fit your experience and specialization and apply directly to the employer from the listing.
