Electrical Engineering Technician Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a electrical engineering technician in New York?
Most New York employers expect at least an associate degree in electrical engineering technology from an accredited program, and many prefer candidates who have completed coursework through institutions like SUNY, CUNY, or NYIT. While New York does not issue a state license specifically for electrical engineering technicians, those working in certain utility or building systems contexts benefit from holding an electrical journeyman or technician certificate recognized by the New York Department of State. An ETA or CompTIA certification strengthens candidacy for electronics-focused roles.
How much do electrical engineering technicians make in New York?
Electrical engineering technicians in New York earn a median of about $77,040 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $48,760 for the lowest 10% to over $111,820 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire electrical engineering technicians in New York?
Employers hiring electrical engineering technicians in New York right now include Brookhaven National Laboratory, Cushman & Wakefield, and M.C. Dean, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's defense contractors on Long Island, major utilities serving the metro area, and transit authorities are among the most consistent sources of full-time technician roles in the state.
Which New York cities have the most electrical engineering technician jobs?
New York, Rochester, and Buffalo account for the most electrical engineering technician openings in New York. New York City dominates because of its concentration of utilities, transit agencies, and large commercial facilities, while Long Island draws strong demand from defense and aerospace employers, and Albany reflects state government infrastructure and energy projects in the Capital Region.
Are there remote electrical engineering technician jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're rare. Electrical engineering technician work is largely hands-on, requiring physical presence for testing, installation, and equipment maintenance. About 4% of electrical engineering technician openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those tend to be in documentation review, CAD support, or technical project coordination rather than lab or field work.
How can I get hired as a electrical engineering technician in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is completing an associate degree program at a SUNY or CUNY campus, then applying directly to apprenticeship or co-op programs that employers like Con Edison and the MTA run for early-career technicians. Entry-level titles such as maintenance technician, electronics assembly technician, or field service trainee are common stepping stones. Holding a CompTIA A+ or ETA Associate CET credential gives candidates a measurable edge when competing for those first openings.
Where can I find and apply to electrical engineering technician jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to electrical engineering technician jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Search the listings, find the roles that match your experience and location, and apply directly to the ones that fit.
