Geotechnical Engineer Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a geotechnical engineer in New York?
You need a Professional Engineer license from the New York State Education Department to practice independently in New York. The path starts with an accredited engineering degree, followed by passing the Fundamentals of Engineering exam, gaining qualifying experience under a licensed PE, and then passing the Principles and Practice of Engineering exam. New York requires license applications to go through the State Education Department's Office of the Professions, not a separate engineering board.
How much do geotechnical engineers make in New York?
Geotechnical engineers in New York earn a median of about $103,760 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $77,290 for the lowest 10% to over $169,050 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire geotechnical engineers in New York?
Employers hiring geotechnical engineers in New York right now include Langan Engineering and Environmental Services, HDR, and HALEY & ALDRICH, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's dense infrastructure pipeline, particularly MTA capital projects and NYC Department of Design and Construction programs, keeps engineering firms of all sizes actively recruiting in the state.
Which New York cities have the most geotechnical engineer jobs?
New York, Albany, and Syracuse consistently have the most geotechnical engineer openings in New York. New York City drives the largest share of demand because of its continuous subway, highway, and high-rise construction activity, while Albany and Buffalo generate steady work through state transportation projects and regional infrastructure investment.
Are there remote geotechnical engineer jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're rare. Geotechnical engineering is heavily field-based, and most roles require on-site investigation, drilling oversight, or in-person client meetings. About 17% of geotechnical engineer openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions tend to involve report writing, data analysis, or project management rather than direct fieldwork.
How can I get hired as a geotechnical engineer in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a staff or junior geotechnical engineer role at a mid-size consulting firm, where you work under a licensed PE on field investigations and lab testing. Large New York firms like AECOM and WSP hire new graduates into structured entry-level programs. Passing the Fundamentals of Engineering exam before you apply and gaining any internship experience with boring logs or soil reports gives you a clear advantage over candidates with a degree alone.
Where can I find and apply to geotechnical engineer jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to geotechnical engineer jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Search the available roles, find the ones that match your experience and location, and apply directly to the employers posting them.
