Engineering Intern Jobs in Montana: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a engineering intern in Montana?
Most engineering intern roles in Montana require active enrollment in or recent graduation from an ABET-accredited engineering program. Montana does not issue a separate intern license, but the Montana Board of Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors oversees the Engineer Intern credential, which you earn by passing the NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering exam. Sitting for that exam during your final year of school strengthens your application significantly with Montana employers.
Which companies hire engineering interns in Montana?
Employers hiring engineering interns in Montana right now include Albertsons, Walgreens, and ArborSys, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Montana's infrastructure and energy sectors drive consistent intern hiring, particularly among firms working on state transportation, water treatment, and utility projects.
Which Montana cities have the most engineering intern jobs?
Missoula, Bozeman, and Helena lead Montana for engineering intern openings. Billings dominates because of its concentration of energy, utility, and infrastructure firms, while Missoula draws intern hiring through the University of Montana research corridor and regional civil engineering consultants, and Great Falls benefits from NorthWestern Energy's presence and ongoing municipal infrastructure investment.
Are there remote engineering intern jobs in Montana?
Yes, but they're rare. Engineering intern work is largely hands-on, involving field visits, lab work, and on-site collaboration that cannot be done remotely. About 25% of engineering intern openings tied to Montana are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, and those positions tend to concentrate in data analysis, GIS mapping, or CAD drafting components of larger projects.
How can I get hired as a engineering intern in Montana with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to summer intern programs run directly by Montana DOT, NorthWestern Energy, or large civil consulting firms before your junior or senior year. University of Montana and Montana State University career centers maintain direct pipelines to these programs. Passing the Fundamentals of Engineering exam early and building a project portfolio from coursework gives candidates a clear edge over applicants with identical academic records.
Where can I find and apply to engineering intern jobs in Montana?
You can find and apply to engineering intern jobs in Montana on Migrate Mate, which lists current Montana openings updated regularly. Search the available roles, find the ones that match your background and target location, and apply directly to the employers posting them.
