Mechanical Engineering Intern Jobs in Montana: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a mechanical engineering intern in Montana?
Enrollment in or recent completion of an ABET-accredited mechanical engineering program is the standard entry point for internship roles in Montana. The state does not require a license to work as an intern, but students who have passed the Fundamentals of Engineering exam administered through the Montana Board of Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors carry a clear advantage. Most Montana employers in energy and mining also expect relevant coursework in thermodynamics and materials science before extending an offer.
Which companies hire mechanical engineering interns in Montana?
Employers hiring mechanical engineering interns in Montana right now include Albertsons, Walgreens, and ArborSys, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Montana's energy and natural resources sector, anchored by mining operations and regional utilities, accounts for a significant share of active internship postings.
Which Montana cities have the most mechanical engineering intern jobs?
Missoula, Bozeman, and Helena have the most mechanical engineering intern openings in Montana. Billings leads because of its concentration of energy companies and refinery operations, while Missoula attracts postings tied to the University of Montana's research partnerships and regional manufacturing, and Great Falls benefits from its proximity to NorthWestern Energy infrastructure and nearby military and industrial facilities.
Are there remote mechanical engineering intern jobs in Montana?
Yes, but they're rare. About 25% of mechanical engineering intern openings tied to Montana are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting how hands-on the role typically is. Most internship work involves physical equipment, lab testing, or on-site facility inspections that require an in-person presence. The portions of the role most likely to shift remote are data analysis, CAD modeling, and technical documentation tasks.
How can I get hired as a mechanical engineering intern in Montana with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying directly to internship programs run by Montana's energy and mining employers before completing your degree. NorthWestern Energy and Stillwater Mining both hire students after their sophomore or junior year for structured summer placements. Passing the Fundamentals of Engineering exam early and building a portfolio of SolidWorks or AutoCAD projects from coursework significantly strengthens your application when competing against candidates with prior co-op experience.
Where can I find and apply to mechanical engineering intern jobs in Montana?
You can find and apply to mechanical engineering intern jobs in Montana on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Search the listings to find roles that fit your background, then apply directly to the ones that match your skills and availability.
