Environmental Attorney Jobs in Chicago: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get an environmental attorney job in Chicago?
Focus on employers concentrated in the Loop and West Loop, where large law firms, utilities, and industrial manufacturers keep in-house counsel teams. Chicago's proximity to the Great Lakes region and its role as a federal regulatory hub make Clean Water Act and CERCLA experience particularly valuable. Candidates with Illinois EPA enforcement background or experience in energy transition work gain a meaningful edge in this market.
Which companies hire environmental attorneys in Chicago?
Chicago environmental attorney roles are posted by Burns & McDonnell, S&C Electric Company, and Terracon Consultants and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. The Chicago market draws from a wide mix of large law firms, petrochemical and utility companies, and city and county government agencies, all of which maintain active environmental compliance practices.
Are there remote environmental attorney jobs in Chicago?
Yes, though with limits, environmental attorney work often requires on-site inspections, agency appearances, and client meetings that make fully remote arrangements less common than in purely transactional legal roles. About 43% of environmental attorney openings tied to Chicago are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, with hybrid arrangements most common in regulatory advisory and litigation support roles rather than field-facing compliance positions.
How can I get an environmental attorney job in Chicago with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in Chicago is through a clerkship or staff attorney role at the Illinois Attorney General's Environmental Enforcement Division or the City of Chicago's Department of Law. Smaller environmental boutiques in River North also hire junior associates who have completed relevant clinic work. A background in environmental science, a summer spent with an Illinois EPA unit, or published writing on Great Lakes policy all strengthen an entry-level application locally.
Which industries hire the most environmental attorneys in Chicago?
The sectors hiring the most environmental attorneys in Chicago are Consulting & Professional Services, Energy, and Manufacturing, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Chicago's role as a Midwest logistics, energy, and manufacturing center means demand is closely tied to regulatory oversight of industrial operations, infrastructure development, and federally funded remediation projects throughout the region.
