Environmental Engineer Jobs in Houston: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a environmental engineer job in Houston?
Focus your search on Houston's oil and gas majors, EPC firms, and environmental consulting companies, which generate the bulk of local openings. Roles cluster in the Energy Corridor, Greenspoint, and along the Ship Channel. Candidates with air permitting, RCRA compliance, or remediation experience stand out in this market. Networking through local chapters of professional engineering societies also opens doors that online applications alone don't.
Which companies hire environmental engineers in Houston?
Houston environmental engineer roles are posted by STP, bp, and GHD and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. The Houston market is dominated by integrated energy companies, large EPC contractors, and regional environmental consulting firms serving the refining and chemical manufacturing corridor.
Are there remote environmental engineer jobs in Houston?
Yes, but selectively, environmental engineering is largely field-intensive, so fully remote roles are uncommon, while hybrid arrangements exist for desk-based compliance, reporting, and data analysis work. About 29% of environmental engineer openings tied to Houston are remote or hybrid as of August 2026. The roles most likely to allow remote days are those focused on environmental impact reporting, regulatory submissions, and GIS analysis rather than site investigation or field sampling.
How can I get a environmental engineer job in Houston with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in Houston is landing a junior role at an environmental consulting firm or an EPC contractor serving the petrochemical sector, where junior staff support field sampling, compliance documentation, and permit preparation. Firms along the Ship Channel and in the Energy Corridor regularly hire entry-level engineers for these support roles. A degree in environmental, civil, or chemical engineering is the standard baseline, and any internship or co-op at a Texas refinery or industrial facility strengthens your application considerably.
Which industries hire the most environmental engineers in Houston?
The sectors hiring the most environmental engineers in Houston are Consulting & Professional Services, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Houston's concentration of refineries, petrochemical plants, and hazardous waste facilities along the Ship Channel creates sustained demand for environmental compliance and remediation expertise that few other U.S. markets match.
