Environmental Engineer Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a environmental engineer in Texas?
To become an environmental engineer in Texas, you need a bachelor's degree in environmental, civil, or chemical engineering from an accredited program, followed by registration with the Texas Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors. You first sit for the Fundamentals of Engineering exam to earn Engineer-in-Training status, then accumulate qualifying experience before taking the Principles and Practice of Engineering exam to become a licensed Professional Engineer in Texas.
How much do environmental engineers make in Texas?
Environmental engineers in Texas earn a median of about $123,060 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $76,510 for the lowest 10% to over $177,820 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire environmental engineers in Texas?
Employers hiring environmental engineers in Texas right now include Garver, Terracon Consultants, and GSI Environmental, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's concentration of petrochemical facilities, municipal water utilities, and large engineering and consulting firms means hiring activity stays consistent even outside peak periods.
Which Texas cities have the most environmental engineer jobs?
Houston, Austin, and Dallas have the most environmental engineer openings in Texas. Houston dominates due to its petrochemical corridor and port-related remediation work, while Austin's rapid growth drives stormwater and land development compliance demand, and Dallas supports a large base of consulting firms and corporate environmental departments serving industrial and municipal clients.
Are there remote environmental engineer jobs in Texas?
Yes, but they're rare. Environmental engineering is a field-heavy discipline where site visits, sampling, and on-site compliance work limit full remote arrangements. About 14% of environmental engineer openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions tend to concentrate in data review, permit writing, and environmental reporting roles rather than fieldwork.
How can I get hired as a environmental engineer in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is securing an Engineer-in-Training designation through the Fundamentals of Engineering exam while applying to junior or staff environmental engineer roles at Texas-based consulting firms like Terracon, Kleinfelder, or WSP. Many of these firms hire new graduates directly into rotational project teams. Internships at TCEQ-regulated industrial sites or summer field roles at municipal utilities also convert into full-time offers and give early exposure that distinguishes candidates in the Texas market.
Where can I find and apply to environmental engineer jobs in Texas?
You can find and apply to environmental engineer jobs in Texas on Migrate Mate, which lists current Texas openings from employers across the state. Find a role that fits and apply directly through the listing.
