Environmental Engineer Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a environmental engineer in New York?
To practice as a licensed environmental engineer in New York, you must earn a Professional Engineer license through the New York State Education Department's Office of the Professions. The path begins with an accredited engineering degree, followed by passing the Fundamentals of Engineering exam, accumulating qualifying experience under a licensed PE, and then passing the Principles and Practice of Engineering exam. Many New York employers also expect familiarity with state DEC remediation programs before hiring at the mid level.
How much do environmental engineers make in New York?
Environmental engineers in New York earn a median of about $101,270 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $67,370 for the lowest 10% to over $157,490 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire environmental engineers in New York?
Employers hiring environmental engineers in New York right now include LaBella Associates, Arcadis, and Langan Engineering and Environmental Services, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's active Brownfield Cleanup Program and aging water infrastructure keep large multidisciplinary consulting firms and municipal engineering firms among the most consistent sources of openings in the state.
Which New York cities have the most environmental engineer jobs?
New York, Syracuse, and Rochester have the most environmental engineer openings in New York. New York City drives volume through major infrastructure consulting firms, Port Authority projects, and DEP water system work, while Albany concentrates state agency and regulatory roles, and Buffalo draws demand from Great Lakes remediation projects and manufacturing-sector compliance work.
Are there remote environmental engineer jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're rare. Environmental engineering is largely field-dependent, involving site inspections, sampling, and in-person regulatory meetings that limit full-remote arrangements. About 19% of environmental engineer openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and the roles most likely to offer flexibility are data analysis, report writing, and regulatory review positions that do not require active site work.
How can I get hired as a environmental engineer in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through a consulting firm's junior or staff engineer program, where new graduates support senior PEs on site assessments and remedial investigations. Large New York-based firms and municipal engineering consultants regularly bring on entry-level candidates for field technician and environmental scientist associate roles. Earning your Engineer-in-Training credential through the Fundamentals of Engineering exam before graduating gives you a concrete advantage, and targeting New York City DEP or DEC internship programs builds state-specific regulatory experience that local employers value.
Where can I find and apply to environmental engineer jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to environmental engineer jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings in the state. Search the available roles, find the ones that match your background and location, and apply directly to each position that fits.
