Environmental Remediation Engineer Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a environmental remediation engineer in California?
The standard path starts with a bachelor's degree in environmental, civil, or chemical engineering, followed by gaining qualifying experience under a licensed engineer and passing the Fundamentals of Engineering exam. California licensure as a Professional Engineer is issued by the California Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, and Geologists, which requires passing the PE exam in your discipline. Many California employers also expect HAZWOPER certification and familiarity with Department of Toxic Substances Control site cleanup protocols before hiring at the project engineer level.
How much do environmental remediation engineers make in California?
Environmental remediation engineers in California earn a median of about $130,410 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $79,790 for the lowest 10% to over $170,790 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire environmental remediation engineers in California?
Employers hiring environmental remediation engineers in California right now include ECS Limited, Amazon, and Geosyntec Consultants, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's concentration of Superfund sites, active oil field decommissioning, and state-funded Brownfields programs means both large national consulting firms and regional specialty contractors maintain steady California hiring pipelines.
Which California cities have the most environmental remediation engineer jobs?
The cities with the most environmental remediation engineer openings in California are Camarillo, Costa Mesa, and Long Beach. Los Angeles and the Bay Area anchor demand through large consulting firm offices, defense contractor sites, and former industrial corridors requiring ongoing cleanup, while Sacramento draws openings through state agency contracts and proximity to Central Valley agricultural and groundwater remediation projects.
Are there remote environmental remediation engineer jobs in California?
Yes, but they're rare. Remediation engineering is inherently field-intensive, with most roles requiring on-site investigation, system oversight, and regulatory agency coordination that cannot be done remotely. About 17% of environmental remediation engineer openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions tend to be report-writing, data review, or project management tasks rather than full-time field roles.
How can I get hired as a environmental remediation engineer in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is an environmental scientist or field technician role at a California consulting firm, where you gain supervised site investigation experience that directly translates to remediation engineering work. Large California-based firms like Tetra Tech and Arcadis hire new graduates into junior technician and staff engineer positions. Completing your HAZWOPER 40-hour certification before applying and pursuing an Engineer-in-Training registration with the California Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, and Geologists gives candidates a measurable edge over others without those credentials.
Where can I find and apply to environmental remediation engineer jobs in California?
You can find and apply to environmental remediation engineer jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings across consulting firms, government contractors, and public agencies. Find roles that fit your experience and apply directly to the employers posting them.
