Field Technician Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a field technician in California?
Most California field technician roles are entered through a vocational or community college program in electronics, electrical technology, or a related technical field, followed by an employer apprenticeship or on-the-job training period. Depending on the specialty, additional credentials matter: biomedical technicians often pursue CBET certification, while electrical field techs working on certain systems may need a California Electrician Certification issued through the Department of Industrial Relations. Starting as a technician helper or junior field associate is the most common first step.
Which companies hire field technicians in California?
Employers hiring field technicians in California right now include EPS, Mainspring Energy, and Rivian, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's size and industry diversity mean openings appear across utilities, healthcare systems, and telecom infrastructure providers throughout the state.
Which California cities have the most field technician jobs?
San Jose, San Francisco, and San Diego consistently have the most field technician openings in California. The concentration reflects the large utility networks, hospital systems, and telecom infrastructure in Southern California and the Bay Area, while San Diego draws steady demand from its defense and biomedical device sectors.
Are there remote field technician jobs in California?
Yes, but they're rare. Field technician work is hands-on and site-dependent by nature, so fully remote roles represent a small share of openings. About 12% of field technician openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those tend to be in technical support coordination, dispatch, or quality-review roles rather than active field service positions.
How can I get hired as a field technician in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is completing a certificate program at a California community college, such as those offered through the California Community Colleges system in electronics or electrical technology, and then applying directly to apprenticeship programs run by utilities like Pacific Gas and Electric or through the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers locals in California. Entry-level titles such as technician helper, field service associate, or equipment installer are common first roles, and an OSHA 10 card or a California Electrician Trainee registration gives candidates a measurable edge over other applicants with no field hours.
Where can I find and apply to field technician jobs in California?
You can find and apply to field technician jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Search the available roles, find the ones that match your experience and location, and apply directly to the employers posting them.
