Firmware Engineer Jobs in Pennsylvania: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a firmware engineer in Pennsylvania?
Most firmware engineers in Pennsylvania enter the field with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or computer science from an accredited institution. Pennsylvania has no state-issued license specific to firmware engineering, so hiring is credential-driven rather than license-driven. Candidates who complete relevant coursework in embedded systems and supplement it with a portfolio of personal or academic projects are well-positioned for Pennsylvania's defense, medical device, and industrial automation employers.
Which companies hire firmware engineers in Pennsylvania?
Employers hiring firmware engineers in Pennsylvania right now include Globus Medical, Eaton, and Smith+Nephew, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Pennsylvania's concentration of defense contractors, medical device manufacturers, and industrial technology firms makes it one of the more active states for embedded systems hiring along the East Coast.
Which Pennsylvania cities have the most firmware engineer jobs?
Pittsburgh, Moon Township, and King of Prussia account for the most firmware engineer openings in Pennsylvania. Philadelphia anchors demand through its large defense contractor footprint and growing medical device corridor, while Pittsburgh's strength in robotics and advanced manufacturing draws significant embedded systems hiring, and suburban markets like Horsham and Malvern benefit from the concentration of technology and pharmaceutical companies along the Route 202 corridor.
Are there remote firmware engineer jobs in Pennsylvania?
Yes, but they're rare. Firmware engineering is fundamentally hands-on work that requires access to physical hardware, lab equipment, and development boards, which limits full-remote arrangements. About 50% of firmware engineer openings tied to Pennsylvania are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, and those tend to be concentrated in higher-level architecture, code review, and systems specification roles rather than active bring-up or debug work.
How can I get hired as a firmware engineer in Pennsylvania with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a junior or associate embedded software engineer role at a mid-size Pennsylvania defense or medical device contractor, where structured onboarding is common. Employers like Lockheed Martin and Siemens run new-graduate engineering programs that accept candidates with internship experience or strong academic project portfolios. Candidates transitioning from adjacent roles such as hardware test engineer or electrical design technician also find Pennsylvania employers receptive, particularly when they can demonstrate hands-on microcontroller work.
Where can I find and apply to firmware engineer jobs in Pennsylvania?
You can find and apply to firmware engineer jobs in Pennsylvania on Migrate Mate, which lists current Pennsylvania openings from employers actively hiring. Find the roles that fit your background and apply directly to the ones that match.
