Fleet Technician Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a fleet technician in New York?
The clearest path is completing an automotive or diesel technology program at a New York vocational school or community college, then pursuing ASE certification in the areas relevant to the fleet you want to service. New York does not issue a separate state fleet technician license, but many municipal and transit employers require a valid New York commercial driver's license alongside ASE credentials. Gaining experience at a dealership or independent shop before moving into fleet roles is a common and effective route.
How much do fleet technicians make in New York?
Fleet technicians in New York earn a median of about $70,100 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $48,360 for the lowest 10% to over $90,090 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire fleet technicians in New York?
Employers hiring fleet technicians in New York right now include First Student, Goodyear, and Frito-Lay, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's large transit authorities, utility companies, and logistics operators maintain some of the most consistently active fleet maintenance departments in the country.
Which New York cities have the most fleet technician jobs?
Albany, Amherst, and Bronx account for the most fleet technician openings in New York. New York City leads because of the concentration of municipal agencies, transit infrastructure, and large logistics hubs, while Buffalo and Albany reflect strong regional demand from public works departments, utility fleets, and distribution centers anchored in those metros.
Are there remote fleet technician jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're rare. Fleet technician work is fundamentally hands-on, requiring physical access to vehicles and equipment, so most roles are fully on-site. About 0% of fleet technician openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions typically involve fleet management coordination, parts procurement, or diagnostic support rather than direct vehicle repair.
How can I get hired as a fleet technician in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry point is applying for a fleet technician helper or lube technician role with a large public-sector employer, such as a New York City agency or a regional transit authority, which regularly bring on trainees through civil service postings. Completing an automotive technology program at a school like Lincoln Tech's Long Island campus or SUNY Alfred gives candidates a credential that large New York fleet operators respect. Entry-level positions in parts departments or as service writers at commercial truck dealerships also create a practical path into the technician track.
