Fleet Technician Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a fleet technician in California?
The most direct path is completing an ASE-accredited automotive or diesel technology program at a California community college, such as those offered by Los Angeles Trade-Technical College or Fresno City College, then earning ASE certifications in your target vehicle class. California does not require a state license specific to fleet technicians, but employers consistently prioritize ASE credentials and a valid California commercial driver's license for roles involving heavy equipment.
How much do fleet technicians make in California?
Fleet technicians in California earn a median of about $73,950 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $47,180 for the lowest 10% to over $96,730 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire fleet technicians in California?
Employers hiring fleet technicians in California right now include Zoox, Clean Harbors, and Nokia, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's scale in logistics, public transit, and waste management means large fleets are common, and both public agencies and private operators recruit continuously across the state.
Which California cities have the most fleet technician jobs?
Hayward, San Francisco, and San Jose lead California for fleet technician openings. Los Angeles and the surrounding Inland Empire account for a large portion of listings because of the region's concentration of freight distribution centers, transit authorities, and utility fleets, while Northern California hubs like the Bay Area draw demand from municipal agencies and tech-sector last-mile delivery operations.
Are there remote fleet technician jobs in California?
Yes, but they're rare. Fleet technician work is fundamentally hands-on, so most roles require an on-site presence at a yard, garage, or maintenance facility. About 15% of fleet technician openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions tend to be in fleet management coordination or parts procurement rather than direct vehicle maintenance.
How can I get hired as a fleet technician in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry point is a lube technician or fleet service writer role at a California public transit agency or large private fleet operator, where on-the-job training is standard. Employers like the Los Angeles County MTA and regional waste management companies run apprenticeship and trainee programs specifically for candidates without full experience. Completing an automotive or diesel program at a California community college and earning even one entry-level ASE certification gives candidates a measurable edge in the hiring process.
Where can I find and apply to fleet technician jobs in California?
You can find and apply to fleet technician jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Find the roles that fit your experience and target location, then apply directly to the employers posting them.
