How do you become a general contractor in California?
Becoming a general contractor in California requires obtaining a license from the Contractors State License Board, the state agency that oversees all contractor licensing. Candidates must pass the CSLB trade and law-and-business exams, demonstrate four years of journeyman-level or supervisory experience in construction, and carry the required insurance and bond. Most applicants hold a degree or vocational training in construction management, civil engineering, or a related field, though equivalent field experience is accepted.
How much do general contractors make in California?
General contractors in California earn a median of about $133,160 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $82,100 for the lowest 10% to over $211,970 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire general contractors in California?

California's scale of public infrastructure investment and year-round building season keeps large regional and national contractors consistently staffed across the state.
Which California cities have the most general contractor jobs?
Santa Maria, Salinas, and Aromas have the most general contractor openings in California right now. Los Angeles anchors demand through its volume of mixed-use, hospitality, and entertainment construction, while the San Francisco Bay Area and San Diego generate consistent work through commercial office development, life sciences campuses, and residential infill projects.

Yes, but they're rare. General contracting is fundamentally an on-site role requiring physical presence for inspections, subcontractor coordination, and daily field oversight.
