Civil Engineering Intern Green Card Jobs
Civil engineering intern roles at U.S. firms can qualify for EB-3 green card sponsorship through PERM labor certification, where your employer documents that no equally qualified U.S. worker is available. Firms in infrastructure, transportation, and environmental sectors have active sponsorship pipelines for entry-level civil engineering candidates with relevant bachelor's degrees.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Green Card Sponsorship as a Civil Engineering Intern
Align your degree with PERM requirements
PERM requires your employer to define minimum qualifications before advertising the role. A civil engineering or closely related bachelor's degree matters here because DOL scrutinizes whether your credentials match the posted job requirements exactly.
Target infrastructure firms with PERM history
Engineering consulting firms working on federal transportation or water infrastructure contracts are more likely to sponsor interns long-term. Search DOL PERM disclosure data by occupation code to verify which employers have certified civil engineering roles before.
Search green card sponsoring jobs on Migrate Mate
Migrate Mate filters civil engineering intern roles by employers with active green card sponsorship history, so you're not cold-applying to firms that have never filed PERM. Use it to build a targeted shortlist before sending applications.
Clarify the internship-to-sponsorship conversion timeline
PERM sponsorship typically begins after a permanent hire, not during an internship. Ask employers during interviews whether they convert interns to full-time sponsored roles and what their standard timeline from hire to I-140 filing looks like.
Verify your employer uses E-Verify before accepting an offer
E-Verify participation is a prerequisite for any PERM-based sponsorship process. Confirm your prospective employer is enrolled before you accept an offer, since non-enrolled employers cannot complete the employment verification steps USCIS requires.
Use OFLC Wage Search to check prevailing wage levels
DOL assigns civil engineering intern roles a prevailing wage level before certifying PERM. Run the OFLC Wage Search for your target metro area and job zone so you can verify your offered salary meets the minimum threshold before the employer files.

Find Civil Engineering Intern JobsCivil Engineering Intern Green Card Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Can a civil engineering intern role qualify for EB-3 green card sponsorship?
Yes, if the role requires at minimum a bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a related field, it can qualify as a professional position under EB-3. The employer must complete PERM labor certification showing no equally qualified U.S. worker was available, then file an I-140 immigrant petition with USCIS on your behalf before you can adjust status.
How does PERM green card sponsorship differ from H-1B sponsorship for civil engineering interns?
H-1B is a temporary nonimmigrant visa with an annual lottery cap, while PERM-based EB-3 sponsorship leads to permanent residency with no annual lottery. The EB-3 process takes longer overall, often two to five years from PERM filing to a green card, but it does not depend on random selection. For many countries outside India and China, EB-3 priority dates are current, meaning the wait is closer to two to three years.
Which employers are most likely to sponsor civil engineering interns for a green card?
Large engineering consulting firms, federal contractors, and municipal infrastructure agencies have the most consistent PERM sponsorship records for civil engineering roles. Firms with ongoing federal contracts under Buy America or infrastructure programs tend to have established immigration pipelines. You can use Migrate Mate to filter civil engineering intern openings by employers who have filed PERM cases in your target location and occupation code.
What documents should I prepare before approaching an employer about green card sponsorship?
You'll need official academic transcripts showing your civil engineering degree, any EIT or FE exam results, and a credential evaluation if your degree is from a non-U.S. institution. DOL requires the employer to define minimum qualifications for the PERM application before advertising, so having your credential documentation ready speeds up the internal review process when the employer's immigration counsel begins preparing the case.
Does my O*NET occupation code affect my EB-3 eligibility as a civil engineering intern?
Yes. O*NET classifies civil engineer roles in Job Zone 4, which corresponds to roles requiring a four-year degree. DOL uses this classification when determining prevailing wage levels during the PERM process. If your intern role is coded under a lower job zone, the employer may need to document the degree requirement explicitly in the job description to support an EB-3 professional petition rather than the skilled worker subcategory.
