Faculty Position Green Card Jobs
Faculty Position roles at U.S. universities and research institutions are among the most established pathways to employment-based green card sponsorship. Many academic employers routinely file PERM labor certifications for tenure-track and research faculty, supporting EB-2 and EB-3 petitions that lead to permanent residency rather than a temporary visa status.

A strong commitment to education and mentorship of fellows, residents, medical students, and other trainees is expected.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Green Card Sponsorship in Faculty Position
Document your foreign degree equivalency early
U.S. academic employers filing PERM for EB-2 faculty roles need your foreign degree evaluated against U.S. standards. Get a credential evaluation from a NACES-member agency before applying so hiring committees and immigration counsel aren't waiting on paperwork mid-process.
Target institutions with established PERM filing history
Research universities, R1 and R2 institutions, and large community college systems routinely sponsor faculty through PERM. Departments that have hired international scholars before already have immigration counsel in place, which significantly shortens your path from offer to I-140 filing.
Understand how faculty PERM differs from standard recruitment
DOL allows universities to use a special handling procedure for faculty roles, substituting competitive academic recruitment for the standard PERM advertising requirements. Your employer must initiate this process during the hiring cycle, not after the offer, so confirm their timeline before accepting.
Search green-card-sponsoring faculty roles through Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter Faculty Position openings by employers with active PERM and I-140 filing history. Targeting institutions that have sponsored international faculty before cuts guesswork out of your job search and focuses your applications where sponsorship is already a standard practice.
Verify prevailing wage requirements for your department and rank
Faculty salaries must meet DOL prevailing wage levels before PERM can be filed. Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the wage for your specific SOC code and institution's geographic area, then confirm your offered salary meets or exceeds that threshold before the offer letter is finalized.
Align your EB-2 versus EB-3 classification with your credentials
If your role requires a master's degree or equivalent and your employer can document that, EB-2 classification shortens priority date waits for most nationalities. If the position is categorized under EB-3, confirm whether your country of birth faces a backlog before committing to that pathway.

Find Faculty Position JobsFaculty Position Green Card Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Do most U.S. universities sponsor green cards for faculty positions?
Research universities, liberal arts colleges, and many community colleges routinely sponsor international faculty through the PERM labor certification process. Institutions with established international hiring pipelines already have immigration counsel and standard procedures in place. Smaller or teaching-focused schools may be willing but lack experience, so it's worth asking directly during the recruitment process how they've handled prior international faculty sponsorship.
How does green card sponsorship differ from H-1B sponsorship for faculty roles?
H-1B sponsorship is temporary and subject to a cap and annual lottery, though cap-exempt employers like universities can sponsor H-1B at any time. Green card sponsorship through PERM and I-140 is permanent and has no annual cap at the petition stage. The process takes longer, typically two to four years before you receive your green card, but it results in lawful permanent residency rather than a status you must renew.
What is the special handling PERM procedure and how does it affect faculty hiring?
DOL allows universities to use the special handling procedure for faculty roles, which lets the competitive academic recruitment process itself satisfy the labor market test instead of the standard PERM advertising requirements. Your employer must use this method during the original hiring cycle. If they miss that window, they may need to restart a full PERM recruitment, adding months to the timeline. Confirm with your department's HR team that they're aware of this deadline before you accept an offer.
How can I find Faculty Position jobs where employers already sponsor green cards?
Use Migrate Mate to search Faculty Position openings filtered by employers with verified PERM and employment-based green card sponsorship history. Focusing your applications on institutions that have already sponsored international faculty reduces the risk of pursuing opportunities where sponsorship is uncertain or where HR teams are unfamiliar with the PERM process.
Can I switch universities after my PERM is approved but before I receive my green card?
Once your I-140 petition is approved and your priority date is current, AC21 portability allows you to change employers to a same or similar role without losing your place in the green card queue, provided your I-485 adjustment of status application has been pending for at least 180 days. For faculty, same or similar generally means a comparable academic or research position. Consult an immigration attorney before making any employer change during this phase.
