Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Green Card Sponsorship in Professor of Rhetoric
Document your teaching and publication record early
Rhetoric faculty PERM cases often hinge on demonstrating a specialized degree-to-role match. Compile syllabi, peer-reviewed publications, and conference presentations before the job search so your credential file is ready when an employer requests it.
Target departments with tenured international faculty
Universities that have previously sponsored foreign-born faculty through PERM are far more likely to have institutional infrastructure for the filing. Ask the hiring committee directly whether the department has completed EB-2 or EB-3 petitions for faculty in the past.
Search green-card-sponsoring academic employers on Migrate Mate
Migrate Mate filters Professor of Rhetoric job listings by employers with active green card sponsorship history, saving you from applying to departments that have never filed a PERM case for a faculty role.
Clarify PERM timing before signing your offer letter
PERM labor certification can take 12 to 18 months or longer before the I-140 stage even begins. Negotiate a clear written commitment from your employer to initiate the PERM process within your first year of employment.
Verify the prevailing wage for your rank and location
DOL sets prevailing wage levels by job zone and geography. Use the OFLC Wage Search to confirm your offered salary meets the DOL wage level for Rhetoric faculty at your specific institution before your employer files the PERM application.
Understand how EB-2 NIW applies to rhetoric research
If your scholarly work addresses a topic of national importance, such as civic discourse or public communication policy, a National Interest Waiver petition lets you self-petition under EB-2 without employer-sponsored PERM, bypassing the standard labor certification requirement entirely.

Find Professor of Rhetoric JobsProfessor of Rhetoric Green Card Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Professor of Rhetoric role qualify for EB-2 or EB-3 sponsorship?
Most tenure-track and visiting Professor of Rhetoric positions qualify for EB-2 because they require a specialized doctoral degree in rhetoric, communication, or a closely related field. Roles requiring only a master's degree may fall under EB-3 instead. The exact classification depends on the minimum requirements stated in the job posting, which USCIS will scrutinize during the I-140 stage.
How does green card sponsorship differ from H-1B for a rhetoric faculty position?
Unlike the H-1B, employment-based green card sponsorship through PERM leads to lawful permanent residency with no annual renewal requirement. There is no lottery for EB-2 or EB-3 petitions, and for most countries there is no significant backlog at those preference levels. The tradeoff is timeline: the full PERM, I-140, and adjustment of status process typically runs two to four years from start to finish.
Can the university's recruitment process satisfy the PERM advertising requirement?
Yes, but only if the original job search was conducted in compliance with DOL's mandatory recruitment steps, including specific advertising channels and timelines. Many universities time their faculty searches knowing they may need to sponsor a foreign national. If the initial search did not meet DOL standards, the employer must run a separate PERM recruitment process before filing, which can delay sponsorship by several months.
Where can I find Professor of Rhetoric jobs with green card sponsorship?
Migrate Mate lets you search Professor of Rhetoric listings specifically filtered by employers with green card sponsorship history. Standard academic job boards do not surface this information, so identifying departments that have filed PERM cases before requires dedicated filtering that Migrate Mate provides for employment-based green card roles.
What happens to my green card case if I leave the sponsoring university before it is approved?
If you leave before your I-140 is approved, the PERM labor certification typically becomes void and the sponsorship process must restart with your new employer. Once your I-140 is approved and your priority date is current, portability rules under AC21 may allow you to transfer sponsorship to a new academic employer in a same or similar occupation without losing your place in the queue.
