Education Counselor Green Card Jobs
Education Counselor roles at universities, K-12 districts, and community colleges can qualify for EB-2 or EB-3 green card sponsorship through PERM labor certification. Employers file on your behalf, certifying that no qualified U.S. worker is available. A master's degree in counseling or a related field strengthens your EB-2 eligibility and speeds the sponsorship process.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Green Card Sponsorship as an Education Counselor
Get your credentials evaluated before applying
If your counseling degree is from outside the U.S., get a credential evaluation from a NACES-member organization before you apply. USCIS requires foreign degrees to be equivalent to a U.S. bachelor's or master's for EB-2 or EB-3 classification, and gaps here stall PERM filings.
Target institutions with active PERM filing history
Public universities, large school districts, and community college systems file PERM petitions far more often than private tutoring centers or charter schools. Focus your search on employers whose HR departments already understand the labor certification timeline and have legal counsel in place.
Search Education Counselor roles on Migrate Mate
Migrate Mate filters Education Counselor jobs by employers with green card sponsorship history, so you're not guessing which postings are visa-realistic. Use it to identify institutions that have filed EB-2 or EB-3 petitions for counseling staff before.
Verify your state licensure transfers before relocating
Most states require school counselors to hold a state-issued license or certification. If you're moving from abroad or another state, confirm your credentials meet local requirements before the PERM process starts, since the job duties in the labor certification must match your actual licensed scope.
Ask about the PERM recruitment timeline during offer negotiations
PERM requires employers to run DOL-mandated recruitment before filing. That process takes roughly 60 to 90 days minimum. Confirm the employer has already begun or is prepared to start, so you're not surprised by a six-month delay between offer acceptance and petition submission.
Check prevailing wage requirements using OFLC Wage Search
DOL sets a prevailing wage for your specific counselor role and location before your employer can file PERM. Use OFLC Wage Search to look up the wage level yourself so you can negotiate an offer that meets the requirement and avoids a wage-based PERM denial.

Find Education Counselor JobsEducation Counselor Green Card Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Education Counselor role qualify for EB-2 or EB-3 green card sponsorship?
Both categories are possible depending on your qualifications. EB-3 covers roles requiring a bachelor's degree, which fits most school counselor positions. EB-2 applies if the role requires a master's degree or the equivalent in counseling, psychology, or a related field. Many university counseling positions are structured to support EB-2 given the advanced degree requirements typically listed in the job description.
How does green card sponsorship differ from H-1B sponsorship for Education Counselors?
Green card sponsorship through PERM leads to permanent residency, not a temporary status. Unlike the H-1B, there is no lottery and no annual cap that limits how many EB-3 petitions can be filed. The tradeoff is time: PERM labor certification, I-140 approval, and adjustment of status together take two to four years for most countries, compared to a faster H-1B start date. Priority date backlogs only become a factor for applicants born in India or China.
Which employers are most likely to sponsor green cards for Education Counselors?
Public universities, community colleges, and large urban school districts are the most consistent green card sponsors for counseling roles. These institutions have HR infrastructure and immigration counsel already in place. Smaller private schools and non-profit counseling organizations occasionally sponsor but less predictably. Use Migrate Mate to search specifically for Education Counselor openings at employers with documented EB-2 or EB-3 filing history, rather than applying broadly and asking about sponsorship after the fact.
What happens to my green card case if I change employers mid-process?
If you leave your sponsoring employer before your I-485 adjustment of status has been pending for 180 days, your PERM and I-140 approvals are typically lost and the process restarts. After 180 days of I-485 pendency, AC21 portability may let you transfer your case to a new employer in the same or similar counseling occupation without losing your priority date. Confirm the new role's job duties align closely with the approved petition before switching.
Does a foreign counseling degree count toward EB-2 or EB-3 eligibility?
Yes, but USCIS requires a credential evaluation showing equivalency to a U.S. degree. A three-year counseling degree from Australia, the UK, or Canada is often found equivalent to a U.S. bachelor's, while a postgraduate diploma in counseling may qualify as the equivalent of a U.S. master's. Use a NACES-member evaluator and have the evaluation completed before your employer files PERM, since degree equivalency must be established at the time of the labor certification.
