Green Card Teaching Jobs
Teaching jobs at K-12 districts, universities, and language schools can qualify for EB-2 or EB-3 green card sponsorship through the PERM labor certification process. Employers file a PERM application with DOL before submitting an I-140 immigrant petition to USCIS, leading to permanent residency rather than a temporary status renewal cycle.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Green Card Sponsorship in Teaching
Match your credentials to the right EB category
EB-2 requires a master's degree or higher in education or a related field. If your highest credential is a bachelor's plus a teaching license, you'll typically land in EB-3 skilled worker, which still leads to a green card through PERM.
Get foreign degree equivalency evaluated early
PERM applications require DOL to verify your qualifications meet the job's minimum requirements. A credential evaluation from a NACES-recognized agency converts your non-U.S. teaching degree into a U.S.-equivalent credential before your employer files.
Target school districts with active PERM filing history
Public K-12 districts, private independent schools, and higher education institutions vary widely in PERM experience. Search OFLC disclosure data to identify which employers have filed labor certifications for teaching roles in your subject area and state.
Find green card sponsoring teaching employers on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter teaching jobs by employers with documented green card sponsorship history, so you're not spending interviews discovering a district has never navigated PERM before.
Negotiate PERM filing into your offer terms
Many school districts will sponsor H-1B visa but won't commit to PERM without direct discussion. Ask explicitly about green card sponsorship during the offer stage, before you sign, since some employer attorneys won't initiate PERM unless the teacher requests it in writing.
Understand how subject-area shortages affect your PERM timeline
DOL's PERM process requires employers to document that no qualified U.S. workers are available. Districts recruiting for shortage subjects like special education, bilingual instruction, or STEM teaching often complete this recruitment step faster than those hiring in oversupplied fields.
Green Card Teaching: Frequently Asked Questions
Can a school district or university sponsor a foreign teacher for a green card?
Yes. Public school districts, private schools, charter schools, and universities regularly sponsor foreign teachers through the EB-2 or EB-3 employment-based green card categories. The employer files a PERM labor certification with DOL, then an I-140 petition with USCIS. The institution must demonstrate it conducted a good-faith recruitment effort before sponsoring the foreign national.
How does green card sponsorship for teachers differ from H-1B sponsorship?
H-1B is a temporary work visa, usually valid for three years and renewable, with an annual lottery cap that creates uncertainty each cycle. PERM-based green card sponsorship is a permanent immigration pathway with no annual cap at the EB-3 level for most countries outside India and China. The PERM process is more document-intensive and takes longer, but you're building toward lawful permanent residency rather than a status you have to renew or re-win in a lottery.
What teaching credentials do I need to qualify for EB-2 versus EB-3?
EB-2 requires a master's degree or higher in education or the subject you teach, or a bachelor's degree plus five years of progressive teaching experience documented in detail. EB-3 covers professionals with a bachelor's degree or skilled workers where the role requires at least two years of training or experience. Most credentialed foreign teachers with a four-year degree qualify at the EB-3 level at minimum.
How do I find teaching employers who are willing to sponsor a green card?
Use Migrate Mate to search for teaching positions filtered by employers with verified green card sponsorship history. Sponsorship willingness varies significantly between districts, so filtering by documented PERM filing history saves you from investing time in applications at institutions that only offer H-1B or no sponsorship at all.
Does my state teaching license affect my PERM application?
Yes, in a practical way. The job description filed with DOL in your PERM application must list only the minimum qualifications actually required for the role. If state law requires a teaching license for K-12 positions, the employer can include it as a requirement. If the license is a preferred credential rather than legally mandated, including it as a requirement could complicate the PERM audit process.
