H-1B Visa School Social Worker Jobs
School Social Worker roles qualify for H-1B sponsorship as specialty occupations requiring a master's degree in social work. Public school districts, charter networks, and private schools all file H-1B petitions, though timelines vary by district size and budget cycle. State licensure requirements add a credential step most applicants underestimate.

Verify your MSW meets specialty occupation standards
USCIS requires a direct relationship between your degree field and the role. A Master of Social Work satisfies this, but a general counseling or psychology degree may trigger an RFE. Pull the O*NET profile for School Social Worker before your petition is filed.
Check state licensure before accepting offers
Most states require a Licensed Clinical Social Worker or Licensed School Social Worker credential before you can practice. Confirm your home-country credentials are eligible for reciprocity or endorsement in the hiring state so licensure delays don't stall your start date.
Target districts with established HR and legal infrastructure
Large urban and suburban public school districts file H-1B petitions far more routinely than small rural ones. Use Migrate Mate to filter employers by verified H-1B LCA filing history in social work occupation codes, so you're not cold-pitching districts that have never sponsored.
Time applications around school district hiring cycles
Districts post most openings between January and April for fall start dates. An H-1B filed in April under cap-subject rules won't result in an October 1 start until the following fiscal year, so confirm whether your target employer can file cap-exempt or bridge you on OPT.
Ask employers about the prevailing wage tier they'll file under
The DOL sets four prevailing wage levels for School Social Worker roles. Before you negotiate, look up the OFLC Wage Search for your county and job zone so you know which tier is legally required and whether the offered salary meets it.
Document supervised clinical hours for credential transfers
Many state licensing boards require proof of post-degree supervised hours completed in your home country. Gather notarized letters from your supervisors and a translated hour log now. USCIS and state boards may both request this documentation independently.

Find School Social Worker JobsSchool Social Worker H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a School Social Worker role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes. USCIS treats School Social Worker as a specialty occupation because it normally requires at least a master's degree in social work. The O*NET classification places it in Job Zone 5, which supports the degree-specific requirement. Your employer's attorney will document this in the H-1B petition, typically using the DOL occupation code 21-1021.
Which types of employers sponsor H-1B visas for School Social Workers?
Public school districts, charter management organizations, private and parochial schools, and hospital-based school programs all sponsor H-1B visas for this role. District size matters: larger urban systems have dedicated HR and legal teams that handle H-1B petitions regularly. You can filter verified H-1B sponsors by occupation on Migrate Mate before applying.
Can a school district file an H-1B outside the annual cap lottery?
Yes, if the district qualifies as a cap-exempt employer. Public school districts affiliated with a government entity or a qualifying nonprofit may be cap-exempt under INA Section 214(g)(5), meaning they can file at any time without entering the lottery. Confirm the district's cap-exempt status with their HR team before counting on an October 1 start date.
How does state social work licensure interact with the H-1B petition?
State licensure is a separate requirement from the H-1B itself, but many districts won't file a petition until you hold or are eligible for the required state credential. Some states grant provisional licenses to international applicants while a full credential is processed. Start the licensure application as early as possible, since delays there directly delay your hire date.
What happens to my H-1B status if a school district loses funding mid-year?
If your employer terminates your position, you have a 60-day grace period to find a new H-1B sponsor, change status, or depart the U.S. A new employer can file an H-1B transfer petition using the portability rules under AC21, allowing you to start work once the transfer petition is filed rather than waiting for approval.
