H-1B1 Singapore Visa Research Scientist Jobs
Research Scientist jobs with H-1B1 Singapore visa sponsorship are accessible without a lottery draw. Singaporean nationals apply directly at the U.S. consulate under the U.S.-Singapore Free Trade Agreement, with a 5,400-visa annual cap that rarely fills. Employers filing for research roles must certify prevailing wages through DOL before your consulate appointment.

Your Impact at LILA
As a Senior Research Associate / Scientist on the Platform Science team within Lila's Autonomous Science Platform, your work will directly contribute to building Lila's next-generation, AI-driven research capabilities. You will have the opportunity to pioneer novel automated instruments centered around advanced processing and characterization of solid state materials — at the critical intersection of hardware, software, and scientific inquiry.
This role is a unique blend of hands-on engineering and scientific investigation, where you will prototype, automate, and validate the platforms that will define the lab of the future. You will operate across a broad set of disciplines, working closely with the vacuum synthesis, platform science, and characterization teams to build tools that dramatically accelerate the pace of scientific discovery and support active research campaigns across multiple initiatives.
What You'll Be Building
- Design, construct, and integrate novel automated experimental platforms with a material emphasis on solid state synthesis and novel processing methods, working in close collaboration with the vacuum synthesis, platform, and characterization teams to align on system requirements and share technical knowledge.
- Work hands-on to integrate hardware components, including optics, robotics, and sensors, into a cohesive, automated workflow.
- Develop end-to-end software stacks from instrument control to data stewardship and integration with downstream models.
- Analyze instrument data to validate system performance, troubleshoot issues, and support research initiatives designed to establish and expand the capabilities of new platforms.
- Collect, document, and interpret experimental data across active research campaigns, ensuring data quality and traceability in support of platform and scientific objectives.
What You'll Need to Succeed
- Masters or Bachelors in Physics, Engineering, Chemistry, Materials Science, or a related field, or Bachelors with equivalent industry experience.
- Hands-on experience building automated instrumentation, including both hardware integration and software control.
- Proficiency in a programming language used for instrument control and data analysis (Python, C#).
- Strong foundational knowledge in engineering principles, including optics, electronics, and/or mechanical design.
Bonus Points For
- Experience with the operation and safety protocols of Class 4 laser systems.
- Familiarity with vacuum-based synthesis techniques such as physical vapor deposition, sputtering, or pulsed laser deposition.
- Experience with solid state materials characterization methods (e.g., XRD, SEM, optical microscopy).
- An inventive, problem-solving mindset with a passion for building new things and tackling open-ended challenges.
- A safety-focused approach with strong communication and teamwork skills across multidisciplinary environments.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Visa Sponsorship as a Research Scientist
Translate your credentials into U.S. specialty occupation language
Your NUS or NTU research degree is recognized, but your petition must show the role requires a degree in a specific scientific field. Pull the O*NET profile for Research Scientist and match your degree field to the listed education requirements before applying.
Target employers with existing DOL LCA filing history
Not every lab or biotech firm has filed a Labor Condition Application before. Search Migrate Mate to filter Research Scientist roles by employers with verified H-1B1 visa sponsorship history, which signals they understand the filing process and aren't starting from scratch.
Confirm your employer will file before consular stage
Unlike H-1B visa, H-1B1 visa doesn't require USCIS petition approval before your appointment. Your employer still must get DOL LCA certification first. Nail down their filing timeline during offer negotiation, not after you've scheduled your consulate interview in Singapore.
Verify the role's wage tier using OFLC Wage Search
DOL prevailing wage levels for Research Scientists vary by specialization and geography. Run the OFLC Wage Search using the correct SOC code for your specific discipline so you know which wage level your offer must meet before the LCA is submitted.
Prepare a one-page specialty occupation summary
Consular officers assess whether your Research Scientist role genuinely requires a specialized degree. Draft a concise document linking your job duties to your degree field, citing your publications or lab focus. This supplements your employer's LCA and strengthens your case at the window.
Understand the annual status renewal timeline
H-1B1 Singapore visas are granted in one-year increments with no USCIS petition renewal required if you're renewing at the consulate. Plan your research project cycles around renewal appointments so a delayed consulate slot doesn't interrupt active grant-funded work.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do Research Scientist roles qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B1 Singapore?
Yes, Research Scientist positions qualify when the role requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific scientific discipline such as biology, chemistry, physics, or materials science. Generalist research titles can be harder to qualify if the job description doesn't specify a required degree field, so ensure your offer letter and employer's LCA reflect the exact scientific specialization.
How does H-1B1 Singapore compare to H-1B for Research Scientist roles?
The H-1B1 Singapore route skips the annual lottery and USCIS petition stage entirely, which means a Singaporean Research Scientist can receive approval in weeks rather than waiting through a multi-month USCIS adjudication. The trade-off is that H-1B1 is issued in one-year increments and doesn't carry dual-intent protection, so you'll renew through the consulate annually rather than filing for a multi-year extension.
How can I find Research Scientist employers who already sponsor H-1B1 Singapore visas?
Migrate Mate filters Research Scientist job listings by employers with verified H-1B1 visa sponsorship history, saving you from approaching labs or biotech companies that have no prior LCA filing experience. Employers who've filed before are far more likely to have HR processes and legal counsel already in place, which reduces delays after you receive an offer.
Can my employer start the H-1B1 process before I find a specific lab or project assignment?
The DOL Labor Condition Application must specify a worksite location and a wage that meets prevailing wage for that area, so your employer needs at least a defined role and location before filing. Some research institutions file the LCA with a general department assignment and refine project details later, but the geographic location and job title must be concrete at the time of certification.
What happens to my H-1B1 status if my research grant ends or my project is discontinued?
H-1B1 visa status is tied to your employer and the specific role on your LCA. If your grant ends and the position is eliminated, your status is no longer valid and you have a short grace period before you must leave, change status, or secure a new sponsoring employer. Singaporean researchers in grant-dependent positions should track renewal timelines closely and discuss contingency plans with their employer's legal team.
