Match your credentials to specialty crop demand
H-2A visa agronomist roles often require field-specific expertise in row crops, tree fruits, or viticulture. Pull the O*NET occupation profile for Agronomists to confirm which technical competencies U.S. employers list, then align your CV to those exact skills before applying.
Verify your degree meets DOL requirements
DOL requires that your academic credentials are verifiable and relevant to the role described in the job order. A foreign degree evaluation from a NACES-member agency strengthens your file and removes a common cause of employer hesitation during H-2A petitions.
Target employers with active H-2A job orders
Use Migrate Mate to filter agronomist roles by verified H-2A sponsorship history, so you're applying to employers already cleared to hire foreign agricultural workers rather than spending time on postings with no sponsorship infrastructure in place.
Ask employers to confirm seasonal duration upfront
H-2A status is tied to a specific start and end date on the approved petition. Before accepting an offer, confirm the contract period covers your intended work season, since extending beyond the certified dates requires a separate DOL application and USCIS amendment.
Understand the AEWR before evaluating any offer
Your guaranteed minimum wage is the Adverse Effect Wage Rate for the state where the work occurs, updated annually by DOL. Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the current AEWR for your destination state before comparing competing offers.
Confirm housing and transport obligations are in writing
H-2A employers must provide free housing meeting federal and state standards and pay or reimburse transportation to and from your home country. Request the housing address and transport arrangement in your job order before signing, not after you arrive.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find agronomist jobs with H-2A visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is the most direct way to search agronomist openings where employers have confirmed H-2A sponsorship. Roles are filtered specifically for positions that qualify under H-2A's temporary and seasonal requirements, so you're not sorting through general agricultural postings from employers who have never filed an H-2A petition.
What housing and transportation must an H-2A employer provide an agronomist?
Your H-2A employer must provide free housing that meets federal and applicable state occupational safety standards for the entire duration of your contract. They must also pay or reimburse inbound and outbound transportation costs between your home country and the U.S. worksite. Both obligations are enforceable through DOL and must appear in your job order.
Does an agronomist role qualify as a seasonal position under H-2A?
An agronomist role qualifies if it's tied to a defined crop cycle, such as pre-plant soil preparation, growing season crop monitoring, or harvest assessment, and the employer can demonstrate the need is temporary or seasonal rather than year-round. Employers must document this in their H-2A job order and attest there are insufficient available domestic workers for the position.
Can I change employers or extend my contract once I'm in the U.S. on H-2A?
Changing employers on H-2A requires the new employer to file a separate petition with USCIS before you begin work for them. Contract extensions require the original employer to file an amended petition with DOL and USCIS before your current authorized end date. Working outside your certified employer or past your end date puts your status at risk.
