Pull your O*NET profile before applying
Superintendent roles fall under a specific SOC code in O*NET that defines required supervisory skills and tasks. Matching your resume language to those descriptors helps employers justify the role in their H-2A visa job order and reduces DOL pushback.
Target farms with multi-commodity operations
Large farms growing multiple crops across overlapping seasons need a Superintendent year-round, but H-2A requires the position to be seasonal. Ask employers upfront how they structure the seasonal period in their job order to confirm you qualify.
Search verified H-2A employers on Migrate Mate
Migrate Mate surfaces employers with active H-2A filing history filtered to Superintendent-level agricultural roles, so you're not cold-applying to farms unfamiliar with the sponsorship process. Start your search there before reaching out directly.
Confirm housing meets H-2A federal standards
Your employer must provide free housing that passes DOL inspection before workers arrive. Ask whether their housing is DOL-certified and whether it accommodates supervisory staff separately, since crew housing conditions affect your on-site authority.
Request the certified job order before signing anything
Once the employer files with DOL and receives a certified job order, get a copy. That document defines your wage rate, start date, and duties. If those details don't match your offer letter, flag the discrepancy before your consular appointment.
Use the OFLC Wage Search to verify your AEWR
The Adverse Effect Wage Rate varies by state and crop year. Run your state through the OFLC Wage Search before negotiating. Employers are legally required to pay whichever is higher between the AEWR and the prevailing wage for your SOC code.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find Superintendent jobs that offer H-2A visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is the most direct way to find Superintendent positions with verified H-2A sponsorship history. Not every farm that posts a superintendent opening has filed an H-2A job order before, so filtering for employers with active or prior filings saves you from pursuing leads that won't move forward. From there, contact the farm's HR or operations manager directly to confirm the position is classified as seasonal in their DOL filing.
What housing and transportation does my H-2A employer have to provide?
Your employer must provide free housing that meets DOL federal or state standards, inspected before you arrive. They're also required to cover transportation costs from your home country to the worksite and back after the contract ends. If your housing is on-farm, the employer handles utilities. These aren't perks they can negotiate away, they're mandatory H-2A employer obligations enforced by DOL.
Does my supervisory experience count toward H-2A Superintendent eligibility?
H-2A doesn't require a formal degree, but your employer's job order must describe duties that justify the Superintendent title under the relevant SOC code. Years of hands-on supervisory experience directing irrigation schedules, managing seasonal crews, and coordinating equipment are exactly what DOL looks for in a qualifying job order. Document your supervisory roles in writing before your employer submits their application.
Can a Superintendent role qualify as seasonal under H-2A rules?
Yes, but the employer must demonstrate the position is tied to a recurring seasonal agricultural need, not a permanent management function. Farms that rely on a Superintendent only during planting and harvest windows have a straightforward case. Farms that need year-round oversight face more scrutiny from DOL and may need to restructure the job order to isolate the seasonal component of the role.
