Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Visa Sponsorship as a Trainee
Verify your trainee role qualifies
H-2B visa covers temporary, non-agricultural trainee positions tied to a specific season or peak need. Confirm your role has a fixed end date and that your employer can document why no qualified U.S. workers are available for the training slot.
Research prevailing wages before negotiating
Use the OFLC Wage Search to find the certified wage level for your trainee occupation code in your target state. Employers must pay at least this rate, so knowing it upfront protects you from underpayment and strengthens your offer evaluation.
Target employers with active DOL certifications
Search Migrate Mate to find employers who have already filed H-2B labor certifications for trainee roles. These employers understand the sponsorship process and are actively hiring, cutting down your search time significantly.
Apply early to beat the 33,000-visa half-cap
The 66,000 annual H-2B cap splits into two halves of 33,000 each for October and April start dates. File your trainee job offer with a start date that aligns with the correct half-year to avoid cap exhaustion before your petition is processed.
Understand your O*NET occupation code
Look up your trainee position in O*NET before your employer files. The DOL uses occupation codes to classify roles and set prevailing wages, so a misclassified trainee title can delay certification or reduce your wage protection.
Confirm the employer has an I-129 filing plan
Once DOL certifies the labor condition, your employer must file Form I-129 with USCIS to petition for your H-2B status. Ask your prospective employer directly whether they have an attorney or designated HR contact handling this step before you accept.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find trainee jobs that offer H-2B visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate lets you search trainee positions filtered by employers with verified H-2B filing history, so you're not cold-applying to companies that have never sponsored the visa. Focus on industries like hospitality, landscaping, and construction, where structured trainee programs with seasonal demand are most common and DOL labor certifications are filed regularly.
How does the H-2B annual cap affect my trainee job application?
USCIS issues no more than 66,000 H-2B visas per fiscal year, divided into two half-year allocations of 33,000 each. If the cap for your start date's half fills before your petition is processed, you'll need to wait for the next allocation period. Coordinating closely with your employer on filing timing is critical to staying inside an open cap window.
Can my H-2B trainee status be extended if the program runs longer than expected?
H-2B status can be extended in increments up to a three-year maximum, but your employer must demonstrate continued temporary need and file an extension petition with USCIS before your current status expires. Trainee programs tied to a defined learning curriculum are more straightforward to extend than open-ended roles, since the DOL requires documented justification for any continued temporary need.
Does my employer need to pay me the same as U.S. workers in a trainee role?
Yes. DOL requires employers to pay H-2B workers at least the prevailing wage for the occupation and location listed on the certified labor condition application. For trainee positions, that wage is determined by your assigned O*NET occupation code and the state where you'll work, not by your trainee title or program level.
