Hospital Social Worker Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a hospital social worker in New York?
You become a hospital social worker in New York by earning a Master of Social Work from a CSWE-accredited program and obtaining licensure through the New York State Education Department Office of the Professions. Most hospital roles require at minimum an LMSW, with many clinical positions requiring the LCSW, which involves supervised post-degree hours and a licensing exam. New York's Office of the Professions oversees both credentials and handles applications.
Which companies hire hospital social workers in New York?
Employers hiring hospital social workers in New York right now include Nicholas H. Noyes Memorial Hospital, NYC Health + Hospitals, and NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's large integrated health systems and public hospital networks tend to post the most consistent volume, particularly for roles in discharge planning and behavioral health units.
Which New York cities have the most hospital social worker jobs?
The cities with the most hospital social worker openings in New York are Elmwood Ave, New York, and Rochester. New York City accounts for the largest share given its concentration of major academic medical centers, Level I trauma centers, and public hospital networks, while Buffalo and Albany draw steady hiring from regional health systems and state-affiliated medical institutions serving upstate populations.
Are there remote hospital social worker jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're rare. Hospital social work is fundamentally an in-person role tied to patient care teams, bedside assessments, and real-time discharge coordination. About 2% of hospital social worker openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions tend to be in telephonic case management or utilization review rather than direct inpatient social work.
How can I get hired as a hospital social worker in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for a social work intern or field placement position at a New York City Health + Hospitals facility or a Northwell Health site during your MSW program, which frequently leads to direct hire after graduation. New-grad LMSW roles in discharge planning or care transition support are common entry points, and moving laterally from a case manager or patient navigator role at a community health center builds competitive experience recognized by hospital hiring teams.
Where can I find and apply to hospital social worker jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to hospital social worker jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers actively hiring in the state. Search the available roles, find the ones that fit your experience and preferred location, and apply directly to each position through the listing.
