Mid Level Industrial Designer Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a mid level industrial designer job?
Position your portfolio around projects you led rather than contributed to, showing your decision-making at each stage from concept through manufacturing handoff. Highlight ownership moments: design reviews you ran, trade-offs you resolved, and feedback you incorporated independently. Employers hiring at this level want evidence you can move a project forward without step-by-step direction, so make that ownership visible in every application touchpoint.
Which companies hire mid level industrial designers?
Companies hiring mid level industrial designers right now include Milwaukee Tool, Aurora Innovation, and Colgate-Palmolive, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Hiring at this level comes from a broad range of organizations, including consumer product brands, medical device manufacturers, and technology hardware companies that need designers who can independently execute complex projects.
Are there remote mid level industrial designer jobs?
Yes, though the role's hands-on nature means availability varies by company and product type. About 29% of mid level industrial designer openings are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, with hybrid arrangements being most common at companies that require occasional factory visits or in-person prototyping sessions. Fully remote roles tend to be concentrated in UX-heavy or early-concept design functions.
How do I move up to a mid level industrial designer role?
The path to mid level is built by taking on progressively larger ownership within each project, moving from executing assigned tasks to shaping the full design direction of a feature or product. Deepening a specialization, such as soft goods, consumer electronics, or medical devices, signals readiness. Consistent delivery of measurable impact, positive feedback from cross-functional partners, and a portfolio that reflects independent judgment are the clearest markers that someone has grown into this tier.
Which industries hire the most mid level industrial designers?
Mid Level industrial designer roles concentrate in Manufacturing, Technology & Software, and Energy, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. These sectors drive hiring at this level because they run active product development cycles that require designers who can own a project from brief to launch without constant supervision.
