Insurance Assistant Jobs in South Dakota: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a insurance assistant in South Dakota?
Most insurance assistant roles in South Dakota require or strongly prefer candidates who hold a South Dakota producer license, issued by the South Dakota Division of Insurance. To obtain it, you pass a state-approved exam for your chosen line of authority, such as property and casualty or life and health, then apply through the Division. Many employers will sponsor the exam for candidates with an associate or bachelor's degree in business or a related field.
Which companies hire insurance assistants in South Dakota?
South Dakota insurance assistant roles are posted by American Family Insurance, AMBA, and CVS Health and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Independent agencies serving agricultural clients across the state's rural counties are particularly consistent sources of insurance assistant openings alongside regional carriers headquartered in Sioux Falls.
Which South Dakota cities have the most insurance assistant jobs?
Sioux Falls, Rapid City, and South Dakota account for the largest share of insurance assistant openings in South Dakota. Sioux Falls drives the highest volume as the state's financial and corporate hub, home to major carriers and large employer benefits departments, while Rapid City and Aberdeen support steady demand through regional agencies and health system insurance operations serving their surrounding communities.
Are there remote insurance assistant jobs in South Dakota?
Yes, and they are reasonably common given the desk-based, administrative nature of most insurance assistant work. About 33% of insurance assistant openings tied to South Dakota are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting carriers' comfort with distributed teams for policy processing and claims support. Roles focused on client-facing producer support or in-office agency coordination are more likely to require an on-site presence.
How can I get hired as a insurance assistant in South Dakota with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is an administrative or customer service role at a local independent agency, where on-the-job training toward a South Dakota producer license is common. Wellmark Blue Cross Blue Shield and Sanford Health's benefits divisions periodically hire entry-level insurance operations coordinators who transition into assistant roles. Completing a property and casualty pre-licensing course before applying gives candidates a clear edge, as does prior experience in a bank teller or medical billing position.
Where can I find and apply to insurance assistant jobs in South Dakota?
You can find and apply to insurance assistant jobs in South Dakota on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers across the state. Search the listings, identify the roles that fit your background and location, and apply directly to the ones that match your experience.
