ABOUT CARTESIA
Our mission is to build the next generation of AI: ubiquitous, interactive intelligence that runs wherever you are. Today, not even the best models can continuously process and reason over a year-long stream of audio, video and text—1B text tokens, 10B audio tokens and 1T video tokens—let alone do this on-device.
We're pioneering the model architectures that will make this possible. Our founding team met as PhDs at the Stanford AI Lab, where we invented State Space Models or SSMs, a new primitive for training efficient, large-scale foundation models. Our team combines deep expertise in model innovation and systems engineering paired with a design-minded product engineering team to build and ship cutting edge models and experiences.
We're funded by leading investors at Index Ventures and Lightspeed Venture Partners, along with Factory, Conviction, A Star, General Catalyst, SV Angel, Databricks and others. We're fortunate to have the support of many amazing advisors, and 90+ angels across many industries, including the world's foremost experts in AI.
ABOUT THE ROLE
As part of our early talent program, Cartesia is hiring a Product Engineer Intern to ship high-impact, model-powered experiences across Cartesia’s surfaces—marketing site, onboarding flows, self-serve funnels, dashboards, docs, and APIs—in close collaboration with our GTM, model serving, research, and product teams.
You’ll work end-to-end across the stack to build, iterate on, and measure developer-first product experiences that drive activation, retention, and revenue. As a Cartesia intern, you’ll ship to production, own meaningful pieces of the product, and see your work directly impact Cartesia’s growth.
YOUR IMPACT
- Ship developer-first growth surfaces by combining user insights, data, and first-principles thinking.
- Bring Cartesia’s latest models to market by rapidly building high-performance interfaces and flows that help users discover, evaluate, and adopt them.
- Instrument and analyze key metrics (e.g., sign-up → first call, time-to-first-production-use, feature adoption) and iterate based on real user behavior.
- Communicate publicly about your work via Cartesia’s official channels as well as your own profiles.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with GTM, model serving, research, and product to craft surfaces that grow Cartesia and multiply our work.
- Help identify and reduce friction across the user journey—from first touch on the website to successful integration in production.
WHAT YOU BRING
- Currently pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, with at least one previous internship or substantial project experience in software development.
- Proficient in TypeScript, with experience building modern web applications using React or a similar framework.
- Comfortable working across the stack; some backend experience in Python or Go with a focus on APIs.
- Evidence of shipping and iterating on a user-facing product in a fast-moving environment (internships, side projects, hackathons, open-source, or startup experience).
- Deep intuition for what makes a great developer experience—clear docs, intuitive APIs, and fast, reliable interfaces.
- Curiosity about product metrics and experimentation; you’re excited to use data and user feedback to guide what you build.
- You’re a little unhinged.
NICE-TO-HAVES
- Experience building or instrumenting growth surfaces such as sign-up flows, pricing pages, dashboards, or docs.
- Familiarity with analytics and experimentation concepts (e.g., event tracking, A/B testing, funnels).
- Experience building voice agents or voice-enabled applications.
- Active online presence on X/Twitter, LinkedIn, or a personal blog showcasing projects, writing, or developer-focused work.
OUR CULTURE
🏢 We’re an in-person team based out of San Francisco. We love being in the office, hanging out together, and learning from each other every day.
🚢 We ship fast. All of our work is novel and cutting edge, and execution speed is paramount. We have a high bar, and we don’t sacrifice quality or design along the way.
🤝 We support each other. We have an open & inclusive culture that’s focused on giving everyone the resources they need to succeed.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship as an AI Product Engineer
Align your training plan to AI engineering tasks
Your DS-2019 requires a detailed training plan tied to specific competencies. Map your learning objectives to concrete AI product tasks like model evaluation, MLOps pipeline work, or LLM fine-tuning so your designated sponsor can justify the placement.
Verify your J-1 category before applying
If you hold a degree and have fewer than five years of post-graduation work experience in AI product development, the Trainee category applies. Research Scholar fits doctoral-level researchers embedded in a university or lab environment. Applying under the wrong category delays your DS-2019.
Search Migrate Mate for host employers open to J-1 placements
Many AI product roles are posted without explicit visa language. Use Migrate Mate to filter for U.S. employers actively hosting international professionals, so you target companies already familiar with the host-employer obligations the J-1 program requires.
Confirm the host employer accepts J-1 trainees
Before submitting applications, ask hiring teams whether their legal or HR department has previously hosted J-1 participants. Companies that have never acted as a host organization often underestimate the compliance steps, which can stall or cancel an otherwise approved offer.
Check your home country's two-year residency requirement early
Nationals from certain countries, and participants whose training was government-funded, must return home for two years after their J-1 period ends before changing to an H-1B or green card. Confirm your status with your designated sponsor before accepting an offer, not after.
Prepare a portfolio demonstrating end-to-end product thinking
J-1 Trainee placements in AI product engineering are scrutinized for genuine knowledge transfer. Host employers and designated sponsors both look for applicants who can show shipped features, model deployment experience, or product iteration cycles, not research papers alone.

Find AI Product Engineer JobsAI Product Engineer J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits an AI Product Engineer role?
Most AI Product Engineer placements fall under the Trainee category, which covers professionals who have graduated within the past five years and are seeking structured training with a U.S. host employer. If your role is embedded in a university research lab or national research institute, the Research Scholar category may apply instead. Your designated sponsor, not the hiring company, determines which category fits your profile and issues the DS-2019 accordingly.
Who actually sponsors my J-1 visa if an AI company hires me?
The hiring AI company is your host employer, not your visa sponsor. Your J-1 sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization such as Cultural Vistas, CIEE, or AIPT. That organization reviews your training plan, issues the DS-2019 form, and monitors your compliance throughout the program. The host employer signs the training plan and provides the placement, but they cannot issue a DS-2019 themselves unless they hold their own State Department designation.
How do I find AI product roles where the employer already understands J-1 hosting?
Search on Migrate Mate, which surfaces U.S. employers familiar with international hiring including J-1 host arrangements. Many AI product job postings omit visa details entirely, so targeting companies with established international talent programs saves time. When you reach the offer stage, confirm the employer has previously signed a training plan with a designated sponsor, since first-time host employers often need months to complete the compliance steps before your DS-2019 can be issued.
Does the two-year home residency requirement affect AI engineers specifically?
It can, and it is worth understanding before you accept an offer. The two-year home residency requirement applies if your J-1 training is government-financed, your home country has designated your field as a skills-shortage area, or you participate in certain exchange programs funded by the U.S. or your home government. AI engineering is not universally designated, but some countries list technology disciplines on their skills-shortage schedules. Your designated sponsor can confirm whether your specific situation triggers the requirement based on your nationality and funding source.
Can I transition from a J-1 to an H-1B after my AI product training ends?
Yes, if you are not subject to the two-year home residency requirement or have obtained a waiver. J-1 Trainees who complete their program and are not subject to that requirement can have an employer petition for an H-1B on their behalf, which enters the annual lottery. If the requirement does apply, you would need either a waiver approved by the State Department or to fulfill the two-year return before a change of status to H-1B becomes available. Plan this transition timeline with your designated sponsor well before your DS-2019 expires.
