Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship as an AI Solutions Engineer
Align your credentials to specialty occupation standards
J-1 Trainee and Research Scholar categories require documented proof that your AI engineering background directly matches the host role. Gather transcripts, publication records, and project portfolios that map your expertise to specific machine learning or systems architecture responsibilities.
Verify host employers through DOL disclosure data
Search OFLC Wage Search to identify U.S. tech employers that have filed Labor Condition Applications for AI or software engineering roles. Employers with active LCA history are operationally familiar with exchange visitor compliance obligations, which speeds your onboarding process.
Search for J-1 compatible roles on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter U.S. employer listings by roles that align with J-1 sponsorship pathways for AI professionals. The platform surfaces host employers actively seeking international talent, narrowing your search beyond generalist job boards that rarely flag exchange visitor compatibility.
Secure a training plan before the DS-2019 is issued
Your designated sponsor organization requires a completed Training or Internship Placement Plan (Form DS-7002) before issuing your DS-2019. Work with your host employer to specify AI project milestones, supervision structure, and measurable learning objectives tied to your engineering role.
Clarify the two-year home residency requirement early
Research Scholar and some Trainee participants funded by their home government or involved in fields on the Exchange Visitor Skills List may be subject to a two-year home residency requirement. Confirm your status before accepting an offer, as it affects H-1B and green card eligibility afterward.
Negotiate AI project scope to satisfy training requirements
J-1 Trainee status requires that your role provides substantive skills development, not just production output. During offer negotiation, define deliverables that include model development, architecture design, or research tasks so your host employer's description satisfies designated sponsor review.

Find AI Solutions Engineer JobsAI Solutions Engineer J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits an AI Solutions Engineer role?
It depends on your career stage. Current students or recent graduates in AI or computer science typically qualify under the Intern category for structured learning experiences. Professionals with at least one year of post-degree work experience in AI engineering are better placed under the Trainee category. Doctoral-level researchers focused on applied machine learning may qualify as Research Scholars, particularly through university or institute host placements.
Who actually sponsors the J-1 visa for a tech role, the employer or a sponsor organization?
The J-1 visa sponsor is always a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, not the hiring company. Organizations like IIE, Cultural Vistas, or CIEE issue the DS-2019 form and take legal responsibility for program compliance. The tech company or research lab hosting you is the host employer, not the visa sponsor. These are two distinct parties with different roles in the exchange visitor process.
How do I find U.S. employers open to hosting J-1 AI engineers?
Migrate Mate is built for exactly this search. It surfaces U.S. employer roles compatible with international sponsorship pathways, including J-1 host placements for AI and engineering professionals. Because most generalist job boards don't flag exchange visitor compatibility, using a platform that filters by visa-aligned roles saves significant time during your outreach phase.
Can I use O*NET to support my J-1 Trainee application for an AI Solutions Engineer role?
Yes. O*NET provides standardized occupation descriptions that designated sponsor organizations and host employers reference when evaluating whether a role qualifies for J-1 Trainee placement. The AI Solutions Engineer profile on O*NET details the knowledge areas, tasks, and technology skills associated with the occupation. Including O*NET occupation codes in your training plan documentation strengthens the case that your role delivers genuine skills development rather than routine production work.
Does the two-year home residency requirement affect AI engineers on J-1 visas?
It can. The two-year home residency requirement applies if your J-1 exchange program was funded by your home government, if your home country lists AI or computer engineering on the Exchange Visitor Skills List, or if you're a graduate medical trainee. If it applies, you must return home for two years before changing to H-1B or applying for a green card, unless you obtain a waiver. Confirm your status with your designated sponsor before signing any offer.
