Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship as an Assistant General Manager
Build a training plan before you apply
J-1 Trainee sponsorship requires a completed DS-7002 training plan before your designated sponsor issues the DS-2019. Draft your proposed learning objectives and hospitality management rotations in advance so host employers can review and co-sign quickly.
Target hotel groups with established J-1 programs
Many independent restaurants or retail operators have never hosted a J-1 trainee and won't know how to set up the required host-site agreement. Focus your search on multi-unit hospitality groups, hotel brands, or food-service management companies with documented J-1 hosting history.
Search for J-1-ready roles on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter for Assistant General Manager roles at U.S. employers that have a record of J-1 participation. Identifying willing host employers upfront saves weeks of outreach to organizations that can't or won't engage with the Trainee program structure.
Confirm your category before approaching a sponsor
If you've graduated within the past 12 months, you may qualify as a J-1 Intern rather than Trainee, which carries different program lengths and eligibility rules. Clarify your graduation date and work history with your intended designated sponsor before beginning the DS-2019 application.
Check whether the two-year home residency rule applies
If your J-1 sponsorship is funded by your home government or if your home country appears on the Exchange Visitor Skills List, you may face a two-year home-residency requirement before changing to most other U.S. visa categories. Confirm this with your designated sponsor before accepting any offer.
Negotiate your training plan scope with the host employer
Designated sponsors review the DS-7002 for specificity and relevance. Vague objectives like 'learn U.S. restaurant operations' are often flagged. Work with your host employer to document measurable competency goals across front-of-house management, financial reporting, and staff supervision in concrete terms.

Find Assistant General Manager JobsAssistant General Manager J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits an Assistant General Manager role?
Most Assistant General Manager candidates qualify under the J-1 Trainee category, which covers professionals who have at least one year of post-degree work experience or five years of industry experience without a degree. Current students or recent graduates within 12 months of finishing school may qualify under the J-1 Intern category instead. The distinction matters because program length, DS-7002 requirements, and eligibility rules differ between the two categories.
Who actually sponsors my J-1 visa, the employer or a separate organization?
A U.S. Department of State-designated sponsor organization, not your employer, issues the DS-2019 and acts as your official J-1 sponsor. Organizations like Cultural Vistas, AIPT, and CIEE administer the program, monitor compliance, and sign off on your training plan. Your host employer, the business where you'll work, co-signs the DS-7002 training plan but is not the legal sponsor. Conflating the two roles is a common source of confusion when applying.
How long can I stay in the U.S. as a J-1 Trainee in a management role?
J-1 Trainee programs are capped at 18 months total, with no extensions beyond that limit within the same category. If your training plan covers multiple disciplines, such as food-and-beverage management, revenue operations, and staffing, each must be documented in the DS-7002 with specific timeframes that fit within the 18-month window. The 30-day grace period after your program end date allows for departure but not additional employment.
Can I use Migrate Mate to find Assistant General Manager positions that support J-1 participation?
Yes. Migrate Mate lets you search for Assistant General Manager roles at U.S. employers that have existing experience with J-1 host arrangements. Because the J-1 Trainee program requires the employer to co-sign a formal training plan and enter into a host-site agreement with a designated sponsor, finding employers already familiar with that process significantly reduces the time from offer to DS-2019 issuance.
What happens if my host employer closes or terminates my training program early?
Your designated sponsor must be notified immediately if your host employer can no longer support your training program. The sponsor is responsible for reporting changes to the U.S. Department of State and advising you on your options. You have a 30-day grace period after termination, but you cannot simply transfer to a new employer without the sponsor reviewing and approving a new DS-7002 with the replacement host site. Delays in notification can affect your immigration record.
