Document your operations credentials precisely
Your DS-2019 training plan must map your prior coursework or professional experience to specific operations management functions. Gather transcripts, employer letters, and performance reviews that demonstrate progression in logistics, process improvement, or team coordination before approaching any designated sponsor.
Distinguish Intern from Trainee eligibility early
The Intern category requires current enrollment or graduation within 12 months. The Trainee category requires a degree plus one year of relevant work experience, or five years of experience without a degree. Confirm which you qualify for before targeting host employers.
Target host employers with structured training programs
Operations roles qualify for J-1 only when the host employer can offer a formal, supervised training experience. Prioritize companies with rotational programs, established onboarding frameworks, or documented standard operating procedures, since the designated sponsor will scrutinize the training plan closely.
Search Migrate Mate for J-1-aligned operations roles
Use Migrate Mate to filter Assistant Operations Manager positions at employers familiar with J-1 host requirements. Finding a host that already understands training plan obligations and DS-2019 compliance significantly reduces the time between offer and program approval.
Clarify the two-year home residency requirement upfront
Government-funded J-1 participants and nationals from certain countries face a two-year home residency requirement before switching to most other visa categories. Verify your eligibility with your designated sponsor before accepting an offer, since this restriction affects your post-program immigration options.
Negotiate a training plan before signing your offer letter
The host employer and designated sponsor must agree on a detailed training plan that specifies phases, objectives, and supervision before the DS-2019 is issued. Request a draft of this plan during the offer stage so timeline delays don't push back your program start date.

Find Assistant Operations Manager JobsAssistant Operations Manager J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits an Assistant Operations Manager role?
Most Assistant Operations Manager candidates qualify under the Trainee category, which is designed for foreign nationals with a degree plus at least one year of relevant work experience, or five or more years of full-time operations experience without a degree. Current students or recent graduates within 12 months of completing their program may qualify under the Intern category instead. The designated sponsor assigns the appropriate category based on your documentation.
Who actually sponsors the J-1 visa for this type of role?
The J-1 visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, not the hiring employer. Organizations like Cultural Vistas or AIPT issue the DS-2019 form, monitor program compliance, and serve as the official sponsor on record. The company offering you the Assistant Operations Manager position is your host employer, not your visa sponsor. These are two separate entities with separate legal responsibilities.
How do I find Assistant Operations Manager host employers open to J-1 trainees?
Use Migrate Mate to search for Assistant Operations Manager roles at employers familiar with J-1 host requirements. Not every employer understands the training plan obligations and compliance oversight that come with hosting a J-1 trainee, so targeting companies already experienced with the program category saves significant time during the offer and application stage.
Can I transition from J-1 Trainee status to an H-1B or other work visa afterward?
It depends on whether the two-year home residency requirement applies to you. If you received government funding, your government required participation, or you are from a country on the Exchange Visitor Skills List, you must return home for two years before most other U.S. work visa categories become available to you. Your designated sponsor can confirm whether this requirement applies before you accept a host offer.
What does the training plan for an Assistant Operations Manager position typically cover?
The training plan, submitted on Form DS-7002, must outline specific phases of the program, the skills you will gain in each phase, how you will be supervised, and measurable objectives tied to operations management functions. For this role, that typically includes exposure to supply chain coordination, workflow analysis, staff scheduling, and performance reporting. The host employer drafts the plan, and the designated sponsor reviews and approves it before issuing your DS-2019.
