Align your training plan to operations functions
Your DS-2019 training plan must map your business operations coursework or work history to specific host activities like process analysis, vendor coordination, or performance reporting. Vague plans citing generic business exposure get rejected by designated sponsors.
Distinguish Intern from Trainee eligibility early
If you're currently enrolled in a degree program, the J-1 Intern category applies. If you graduated within the past 12 months or have at least one year of relevant work experience abroad, the Trainee category fits. Applying under the wrong category delays your DS-2019 issuance.
Search Migrate Mate to find host employers
Use Migrate Mate to identify U.S. companies actively hosting exchange visitors in business operations roles. Filtering by J-1-compatible positions saves you from approaching employers unfamiliar with the host organization obligations required under State Department regulations.
Verify host employer size and structure requirements
Designated sponsors assess whether a host organization has adequate supervisory capacity and a structured training environment. Startups with fewer than five employees or companies without dedicated HR functions are frequently declined as hosts for business operations trainees.
Confirm your home-country residency requirement status
Business operations roles sourced through government-funded programs or certain nationalities trigger the two-year home-country physical presence requirement after your J-1 ends. Confirm your status with your designated sponsor before accepting an offer, since a waiver process adds significant time.
Request an offer letter that covers training objectives
Your host employer's offer letter must outline the specific operational skills you'll develop, your supervisor's qualifications, and the duration of each training phase. Designated sponsors use this letter to validate your DS-7002 training plan before issuing the DS-2019.

Find Business Operations Associate JobsBusiness Operations Associate J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits a Business Operations Associate role?
It depends on your current status. If you're enrolled in a business, economics, or related degree program, the J-1 Intern category applies and allows up to 12 months of training. If you've graduated or have at least one year of overseas professional experience in operations or management, the J-1 Trainee category is the correct fit and permits up to 18 months.
Who actually sponsors the J-1 visa for this role, the employer or a separate organization?
The employer is the host, not the visa sponsor. Your J-1 visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization such as Cultural Vistas, CIEE, or AIPT. That organization reviews your training plan, issues your DS-2019 form, and monitors your placement throughout the program. The host employer works alongside the designated sponsor but cannot issue J-1 documentation independently.
How do I find U.S. employers willing to host a J-1 business operations trainee?
Most general job boards don't filter for J-1 host-employer compatibility. Migrate Mate lets you search specifically for U.S. roles and employers aligned with J-1 exchange visitor programs, so you're not cold-applying to companies unfamiliar with DS-2019 obligations, training plan requirements, or designated sponsor oversight.
What does the two-year home residency requirement mean for business operations positions?
Some J-1 participants must return to their home country for two years after their program ends before they can apply for an H-1B, L-1, or permanent residence. This requirement applies if your program was government-funded, if your home country designated your field as needed, or based on your nationality. Your designated sponsor can confirm whether it applies to your specific situation before you accept a role.
Can a J-1 business operations trainee extend their program or change host employers?
Extensions within the maximum authorized period are possible if your designated sponsor approves and the host employer can demonstrate continued training value. Changing host employers mid-program is more complex because your DS-2019 is tied to the original host's training plan. A new or amended training plan must be submitted and approved before you begin work at a different company.
