J-1 Visa COO Jobs
COO roles in the United States are available to international professionals through the J-1 visa's Trainee and Specialist program categories, which require a designated sponsor organization to issue your DS-2019. Securing sponsorship means finding both a host employer willing to structure a qualifying training plan and a State Department-designated sponsor to administer it.

Document your executive leadership credentials clearly
Designated sponsors assess whether your background justifies a COO-level training placement. Compile board resolutions, P&L ownership records, and org charts showing direct reports to demonstrate the seniority your DS-2019 application requires.
Target host employers with established J-1 histories
Use Migrate Mate to identify U.S. companies that have hosted J-1 exchange visitors in operations or executive functions before. Experienced host employers already understand the DS-2019 process and training plan obligations, which shortens your path to an offer.
Match your category to your career stage precisely
COO candidates fewer than five years post-degree typically qualify under the Trainee category. Professionals with longer track records apply under Specialist. Misclassifying yourself delays sponsor review, so confirm your eligibility tier before approaching any designated sponsor.
Build a training plan before the host employer files anything
Designated sponsors require a detailed Training Plan form (DS-7002) showing structured learning objectives, not just job duties. Draft a 52-week plan with measurable milestones in operations strategy, financial oversight, and cross-functional leadership before your host employer initiates the sponsorship process.
Clarify the two-year home residency requirement early
The J-1 Specialist category often carries a two-year home residency requirement, which restricts immediate H-1B or green card transitions afterward. Confirm with your designated sponsor whether your country of nationality and field of expertise trigger this requirement before accepting any host employer offer.
Negotiate who absorbs the sponsor administrative fees
Designated sponsor organizations charge program administration fees that neither USCIS nor DOL mandate employers to cover. In COO-level negotiations, host employers frequently absorb these costs, but you need to raise the allocation explicitly during offer discussions rather than after the DS-2019 is issued.

Find COO JobsCOO J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category applies to COO roles?
Most COO candidates qualify under the Trainee or Specialist category. Trainee applies if you're within five years of graduation and the placement provides structured skill development. Specialist applies to seasoned executives with a narrowly defined expertise area. The host employer and your designated sponsor organization jointly determine which category fits your background before issuing the DS-2019.
Who actually sponsors my J-1 visa as a COO candidate?
The visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization such as Cultural Vistas or AIPT, not your host employer. The host employer provides the operational role and signs the training plan, but the designated sponsor issues your DS-2019, monitors your program compliance, and holds legal responsibility for your exchange visitor status throughout the placement.
How do I find U.S. companies open to hosting a J-1 COO candidate?
Most generic job boards don't filter for J-1 host employer history, which makes identifying receptive companies time-consuming. Migrate Mate lets you search specifically for U.S. employers and roles aligned with J-1 sponsorship, so you can focus outreach on companies already familiar with the DS-2019 and training plan process rather than educating employers from scratch.
Can the two-year home residency requirement affect a COO's immigration options afterward?
Yes. If your DS-2019 is issued under a category subject to the two-year home residency requirement, you generally can't change status to H-1B or apply for a green card until you've fulfilled that obligation or obtained a waiver. COO candidates who plan to transition to long-term U.S. employment should confirm their requirement status with their designated sponsor before the program starts.
What does the DS-7002 training plan need to include for an executive-level role?
The DS-7002 must show structured learning phases with measurable objectives, not a standard job description. For COO placements, sponsors expect phases covering operational systems, financial reporting oversight, team leadership, and strategic planning. Each phase needs defined evaluation checkpoints. Submitting a plan that reads like an employment contract rather than a developmental curriculum is the most common reason sponsors delay or deny approval.
