J-1 Visa Data Architect Jobs
Data Architect roles in the United States are accessible to international professionals through J-1 visa sponsorship, most commonly under the Trainee or Research Scholar program categories. Designated sponsors issue the DS-2019 form that authorizes your exchange, separate from your host employer's hiring process. Note that some J-1 categories carry a two-year home residency requirement.

Want to join Guidewire Basecamp?
A place for you to belong and thrive. Guidewire Basecamp is our graduate and intern program. Designed through research from our own former interns and graduate level employees, Guidewire Basecamp is the program that all our interns and graduates become a part of when they walk through our doors. We give them the tools to leap further and find their own way, so they can confidently Navigate What's Next in their career.
What you’ll do
- Help develop or maintain simple tools, scripts, or templates (e.g., spreadsheets, basic scripts) that automate routine Professional Services workflows and improve day-to-day operational efficiency for US Commercial Line Solutions.
- Implement small, well-defined coding tasks (for example, data transformations, simple integrations,) and internal utilities - using languages such as Java, JavaScript, SQL, or Python under guidance from senior engineers.
- Use AI-assisted development tools (for example, code assistants, test generators, and documentation helpers) to prototype improvements, refactor existing code, and document processes in a safe, compliant way.
- Experiment with AI-based automation (scripts, prompts, or small utilities) to streamline repetitive team workflows and propose measurable improvements that support faster, more consistent implementations.
- Support other Solution Service owners by organizing and prioritizing the Solution Services backlog, maintaining clear documentation, and ensuring alignment with overall Commercial Lines Services strategies.
- Document small process issues the team encounters and propose pragmatic, incremental changes to improve business processes and ways of working.
- Participate in agile ceremonies (standups, planning, reviews, retrospectives) and selected field activities (workshops, pilots, go-live support) taking ownership of well-defined follow-up tasks that improve solution adoption and customer outcomes.
- Collaborate with internal Guidewire teams and external partners on clearly scoped tasks that contribute to the development and adoption of USBC Solutions.
- Contribute to knowledge enablement for consultants by drafting or updating quick-reference guides, checklists, and basic training materials for USBC Solution Services.
At Guidewire, we foster a culture of curiosity, innovation, and responsible use of AI–empowering our teams to continuously leverage emerging technologies and data-driven insights to enhance productivity and outcomes.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship in Data Architect
Map your credentials to J-1 categories
Trainee status fits professionals with a degree plus one year of experience outside the U.S. Research Scholar applies if your Data Architect role is tied to academic or institutional research. Confirm which category your background supports before approaching any designated sponsor.
Audit your two-year home residency exposure
Data Architect roles at federally funded research institutions or government-linked host organizations often trigger the two-year home residency requirement. Check your DS-2019 before accepting any offer, because this affects your ability to change to H-1B or green card status afterward.
Build a training plan before employer interviews
J-1 Trainee and Specialist programs require a signed Training Plan outlining specific data architecture skills you will develop. Draft this document with measurable objectives tied to cloud platforms, data modeling, or governance frameworks so host employers can review it before making an offer.
Search for host employers through Migrate Mate
Data Architect positions with J-1-compatible host organizations are not always labeled as such in standard job listings. Use Migrate Mate to filter roles at organizations with documented exchange visitor hosting history so you can focus outreach where J-1 placement is already established.
Verify wage compliance using OFLC Wage Search
Your designated sponsor must certify that your host employer's offered compensation meets prevailing wage standards for your location and role level. Cross-check the Data Architect wage tier for your metro area using OFLC Wage Search before your training plan is finalized and submitted.
Confirm DS-2019 issuance timeline with your sponsor
Processing time between host employer acceptance and DS-2019 issuance varies by designated sponsor organization. CIEE, Cultural Vistas, and IIE each run their own review cycles. Get the expected issuance date in writing before resigning from any current position or booking travel.

Find Data Architect JobsData Architect J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits a Data Architect role?
Most Data Architect positions fall under the Trainee or Specialist category if you are an experienced professional developing skills at a U.S. host organization. Research Scholar applies when the role is embedded in a university or research institute with a defined academic mission. Current students completing a degree-related internship may qualify under the Intern category instead.
Who actually sponsors the J-1 visa for a Data Architect position?
The visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, such as CIEE, Cultural Vistas, or IIE, not your host employer. The designated sponsor issues the DS-2019 form, monitors your exchange program compliance, and signs the training plan. Your host employer hires you and funds the role but does not hold the sponsorship designation required to authorize the J-1 exchange.
Does the two-year home residency requirement apply to Data Architects on J-1?
It depends on your funding source and your home country's designation on the Exchange Visitor Skills List. Data Architect roles at federally funded research centers or government-partnered institutions commonly trigger this requirement. If it applies, you cannot change to H-1B or most immigrant visa categories until you fulfill two years of home residency or obtain a waiver from the relevant authorities.
How do I find U.S. employers willing to host a J-1 Data Architect?
Standard job listings rarely indicate J-1 hosting compatibility. Use Migrate Mate to identify organizations that have hosted J-1 exchange visitors in data and technology roles, so your outreach is directed at employers already familiar with the training plan requirements and designated sponsor coordination that J-1 placements involve.
What does the training plan need to cover for a Data Architect J-1 placement?
The training plan must outline specific, measurable skills you will develop during the exchange, tied to your role as a Data Architect. Reviewers look for concrete objectives around areas such as cloud data infrastructure, data governance frameworks, or enterprise modeling methodologies. Vague descriptions of general IT work are commonly rejected by designated sponsors during the DS-2019 review process.
