Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship as an Education Program Manager
Match your credentials to the right J-1 category
Specialist category requires recognized expertise in a specialized field, while Trainee suits structured on-the-job learning for early-career professionals. Confirm which category your background supports before approaching host employers, since mismatched applications stall quickly.
Audit your program design documentation early
Designated sponsors like Cultural Vistas and CIEE require a detailed Training or Exchange Visitor Program plan before issuing a DS-2019. Draft your program objectives, learning goals, and supervision structure before your host employer finalizes your offer letter.
Search for host employers using Migrate Mate
Filter by job title and visa type on Migrate Mate to find U.S. employers actively hosting J-1 exchange visitors in education program roles, so you're targeting organizations already familiar with the DS-2019 process and host obligations.
Check whether the two-year home residency rule applies
Specialist and some Trainee placements funded by your home government or U.S. government can trigger a two-year return requirement after your program ends. Review your DS-2019 and consult your designated sponsor before accepting any offer with a green card pathway in mind.
Confirm the host employer's willingness to sign a training plan
Your host must co-sign a formal training plan and agree to supervision obligations before your designated sponsor will issue the DS-2019. Raise this requirement during the offer-stage conversation, not after you've accepted, to avoid late-stage program delays.
Clarify program duration limits before negotiating start dates
Specialist programs run up to five years maximum and Trainee programs up to 18 months. Build your start date negotiation around those ceilings so your host's project timeline and your authorized stay don't conflict from day one.

Find Education Program Manager JobsEducation Program Manager J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits an Education Program Manager role?
It depends on your career stage. If you're early in your career and the placement involves structured learning under supervision, the Trainee category applies, capped at 18 months. If you bring recognized specialized expertise in education program design, curriculum development, or training management, the Specialist category is the more appropriate fit and allows up to five years.
Who actually sponsors the J-1 visa for an Education Program Manager?
The visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, such as Cultural Vistas or CIEE, not the employer where you'll work. That employer is the host organization. The designated sponsor issues your DS-2019, monitors your program compliance, and serves as your primary point of contact with the State Department throughout your exchange.
How can I find U.S. employers open to hosting J-1 Education Program Managers?
Migrate Mate lets you filter by job title and visa type to surface host employers actively seeking J-1 exchange visitors in education and program management roles. Targeting employers already familiar with J-1 host obligations saves you from spending time convincing organizations unfamiliar with the DS-2019 process and training plan requirements.
Will an Education Program Manager placement trigger the two-year home residency requirement?
Possibly. The requirement applies when your exchange program is financed by the U.S. government, your home government, or involves skills on the State Department's exchange visitor skills list. Review your DS-2019's exchange visitor category and funding source carefully with your designated sponsor before accepting any offer, especially if you plan to pursue a green card or H-1B status afterward.
What documentation does a host employer need to support a J-1 Specialist or Trainee application?
The host must co-sign a formal Training Plan or program objectives document outlining your responsibilities, learning goals, supervision structure, and how the experience fits your professional development. Designated sponsors review this before issuing the DS-2019. Having a draft ready when you reach the offer stage speeds up the sponsor's review and reduces back-and-forth with the host.
