Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship as a Technology Project Manager
Align your credentials with Trainee requirements
The J-1 Trainee category requires a degree plus one year of related experience abroad, or five years of work experience without a degree. Document your project management credentials, PMP certification, and overseas employment history before approaching any host employer.
Target host employers with active project portfolios
Firms running multi-phase technology programs, agile development teams, or infrastructure rollouts are natural fits for a J-1 Trainee in project management. Focus your search on organizations where a structured training plan maps directly to real deliverables.
Search Migrate Mate to find J-1-aligned roles
Use Migrate Mate to identify U.S. employers advertising Technology Project Manager positions that align with J-1 sponsorship. Filtering by role and industry narrows your list to hosts already familiar with exchange visitor program requirements.
Build a training plan before your DS-2019 is issued
The designated sponsor organization requires a detailed Training or Internship Placement Plan outlining your learning objectives, supervision structure, and weekly activities. Draft this collaboratively with your prospective host employer before the sponsor can issue your DS-2019.
Confirm the two-year home residency requirement early
Some J-1 participants in specialist or technology roles are subject to a two-year foreign residency requirement based on their home country or funding source. Resolve your requirement status before accepting an offer, since it affects future H-1B or green card eligibility.
Verify the host employer's E-Verify enrollment status
Designated sponsor organizations typically require host employers to be enrolled in E-Verify before issuing a DS-2019. Confirm enrollment with your prospective host during the offer stage to avoid delays in the training plan approval process.

Find Technology Project Manager JobsTechnology Project Manager J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits a Technology Project Manager role?
Most Technology Project Managers qualify under the J-1 Trainee category, which covers professionals who hold a degree plus at least one year of related overseas experience or five or more years of field experience. Those with deep specialization and significant career tenure may qualify under the Specialist category instead. Your designated sponsor organization determines which category applies based on your background and the host employer's training objectives.
Who actually sponsors the J-1 visa - the employer or a separate organization?
The J-1 visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization such as Cultural Vistas, AIPT, or IIE, not the hiring employer. The employer acts as the host organization and provides your work placement. The designated sponsor issues your DS-2019, monitors program compliance, and maintains legal responsibility for your exchange visitor status throughout your program.
How do I find U.S. employers willing to host a J-1 Trainee in project management?
Search Migrate Mate to identify Technology Project Manager roles at U.S. employers whose hiring patterns align with J-1 exchange visitor programs. Prioritize organizations running long-cycle technology initiatives where a structured training period adds clear value, since host employers must commit to a formal training plan and sponsor oversight before your DS-2019 can be issued.
Does the two-year home residency requirement apply to Technology Project Managers on J-1 visas?
It depends on your nationality and whether your program was government-funded. Technology roles sometimes attract the requirement under the skills list provision, which applies to nationals of countries where project management and IT skills are deemed in short supply. Check your DS-2019 and consult with your designated sponsor to determine whether the requirement is annotated on your visa, since it must be resolved or waived before you can change to H-1B or immigrant status.
What documents does a host employer need to prepare before I can get a DS-2019?
The host employer must provide a completed Training or Internship Placement Plan that details your learning objectives, supervision arrangements, and a week-by-week activity schedule tied to project management competencies. They also need to demonstrate E-Verify enrollment and confirm that your role meets the program's training, not just employment, standards. The designated sponsor reviews all materials before issuing the DS-2019.
