What You’ll Do
As the Associate Marketing Director for the Vox Media Podcast Network, you’ll lead the launch strategy for new shows, explore new tactics and channels for audience growth, and help improve our marketing processes to make our marketing team more effective. This role blends strategic leadership with hands-on execution, using data, experimentation, and strong creative instincts to create long-term growth. This role requires close partnership with show hosts, producers, and teams across Editorial, Communications, and Engagement. You’ll serve as a senior marketing lead who can align stakeholders around clear growth priorities, strengthen cross-promotion across the network, and bring an audience-centered, data-informed perspective to our business. Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship in Marketing Director
Align your degree field with the role
J-1 Trainee eligibility requires your degree or field of study to directly relate to marketing. A business or communications degree supports your application; a degree in an unrelated field may require documentation showing how your coursework connects.
Distinguish Trainee from Specialist category eligibility
If you hold a foreign degree and at least one year of marketing experience abroad, you qualify for the Trainee category. The Specialist category applies if you have at least five years of progressive marketing experience and recognized expertise in lieu of a degree.
Search verified J-1-friendly employers on Migrate Mate
Filter by role type and visa category on Migrate Mate to identify U.S. host employers actively open to J-1 exchange visitors for marketing positions. Many open roles are never labeled J-1-compatible in standard job listings.
Confirm the host employer will sign your training plan
Before accepting an offer, verify that your prospective employer agrees to complete a detailed training plan with your designated sponsor. Without a signed, program-specific training plan, the designated sponsor cannot issue your DS-2019.
Check whether your country triggers home residency
Marketing Directors from countries on the Exchange Visitor Skills List, or whose programs are government-funded, face a two-year home-country residency requirement after their J-1 ends. The State Department's Exchange Visitor Program database lists affected nationalities.
Request the 30-day grace period timeline from your sponsor
After your authorized exchange period ends, J-1 holders receive a 30-day grace period for departure only, not continued employment. Confirm your end date with your designated sponsor well before your final day with the host employer.

Find Marketing Director JobsMarketing Director J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits a Marketing Director role?
Most Marketing Director candidates qualify under either the Trainee or Specialist category. Trainee applies if you have a relevant degree plus at least one year of foreign work experience in marketing. Specialist applies if you have at least five years of recognized expertise in the field. Neither category applies to current students, who would use the Intern category for shorter placements.
Is the hiring company my J-1 visa sponsor?
No. Under the J-1 program, the visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization that issues your DS-2019 form, monitors program compliance, and serves as your official exchange sponsor. The company that hires you is the host employer. The host and designated sponsor are separate entities, and both must agree to the placement before your visa is issued.
How do I find U.S. employers open to hosting J-1 Marketing Directors?
Most job postings don't specify J-1 compatibility, so standard searches often miss the relevant roles. Migrate Mate lets you filter for U.S. employers and positions that align with J-1 exchange visitor categories, including marketing-focused roles at the Director level, without relying on employers to self-identify in their listings.
What does the training plan requirement mean for a senior marketing role?
Your designated sponsor requires a structured training plan outlining the specific skills, tasks, and knowledge you'll gain during the exchange. For a Marketing Director role, this plan must describe activities that constitute genuine knowledge transfer, not routine employment. Generic job descriptions are rejected. The host employer drafts this document with your sponsor's guidance and signs it before the DS-2019 is issued.
Can a J-1 Marketing Director transition to a work visa after the program ends?
Yes, but timing matters. If you face the two-year home residency requirement, you must fulfill or obtain a waiver before changing to H-1B or other work visa status. If no residency requirement applies, you can change status or apply for an H-1B without first returning home. Consult your designated sponsor early to determine which requirement, if any, applies to your country and funding source.
