Build a portfolio before you apply
Field marketing roles require tangible proof of campaign execution. Compile examples of event coordination, brand activation, or lead generation work you've done, because host employers evaluate candidates on demonstrated output, not just coursework or job titles.
Confirm your program category early
If you're currently enrolled in a degree program, the J-1 Intern category applies. If you've graduated within the past 12 months, Trainee is the correct category. Filing under the wrong category invalidates your DS-2019, so verify this with your designated sponsor before any offer is extended.
Search Migrate Mate for J-1-aligned roles
Use Migrate Mate to identify U.S. employers actively hosting J-1 exchange visitors in marketing functions. Filtering by role type and location helps you target companies whose host agreements and training plan structures already match field marketing placements.
Request a written training plan before accepting
Your designated sponsor requires a structured training plan detailing learning objectives, supervision arrangements, and skill benchmarks. Ask your prospective host employer to draft this document during the offer stage, not after, because gaps in the plan delay DS-2019 issuance.
Check whether your role triggers the two-year rule
The J-1 two-year home-country physical presence requirement applies if your home country funded your exchange or if your field appears on the Exchange Visitor Skills List. Confirm your status with your designated sponsor before signing any employment agreement.
Align your start date with DS-2019 processing time
Designated sponsors typically need two to four weeks to issue a DS-2019 after receiving a completed application and training plan. Factor this into your offer negotiation so your proposed start date is realistic and doesn't require expedited processing your sponsor can't guarantee.

Find Field Marketing Associate JobsField Marketing Associate J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category covers Field Marketing Associate positions?
The J-1 Intern category covers current degree students and recent graduates within 12 months of graduation pursuing field marketing placements. If you've been out of school longer, the Trainee category applies, but it requires at least one year of post-degree work experience in marketing or a related field. Your designated sponsor determines which category fits your background before issuing a DS-2019.
Who actually sponsors my J-1 visa for a field marketing role?
Your visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, such as Cultural Vistas, CIEE, or AIPT, not your employer. The host company where you work in a field marketing capacity is called the host organization. The designated sponsor issues your DS-2019, approves your training plan, and monitors your compliance throughout the exchange program.
How do I find U.S. employers willing to host a J-1 exchange visitor in a marketing role?
Most job boards don't filter by J-1 host status, making the search slow. Migrate Mate lets you search specifically for U.S. employers and roles aligned with J-1 exchange visitor placements in marketing functions, so you spend time on genuinely viable opportunities rather than cold-applying and discovering visa incompatibility after an interview.
Can a Field Marketing Associate role qualify for J-1 sponsorship if it involves heavy event travel?
Yes, field roles with regional travel components can qualify, but your training plan must document the learning objectives tied to each activity. Your designated sponsor reviews the plan to confirm the placement is educational in purpose, not just operational labor. Roles that are primarily logistical with no structured skill development are more likely to be questioned during sponsor review.
Does the two-year home-country requirement apply to J-1 field marketing placements?
It depends on your home country and funding source. The two-year home-country physical presence requirement applies if your country appears on the Exchange Visitor Skills List or if government funding supported your exchange. Marketing is not a skills-list field in most countries, but you must confirm your individual situation with your designated sponsor before accepting an offer, since the requirement affects future visa eligibility.
