Verify your training plan covers inventory systems
Your J-1 Trainee application requires a detailed Training/Internship Placement Plan (DS-7002). Make sure it specifies hands-on exposure to parts cataloguing, bin management, and inventory software, vague objectives get flagged by designated sponsors.
Target host employers with parts department depth
Automotive dealerships, heavy equipment distributors, and fleet maintenance companies run structured parts operations. These employers are more likely to support a multi-phase J-1 training plan than small independent shops with a single parts counter.
Search J-1-aligned roles on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter U.S. employer listings by roles that align with J-1 sponsorship. It surfaces host employers in parts, logistics, and supply chain where exchange visitor placements are a known hiring pathway.
Confirm the Intern versus Trainee distinction early
If you're currently enrolled in a post-secondary program, the J-1 Intern category applies. If you've graduated within the past 12 months or are an early-career professional, J-1 Trainee is the correct category. Applying under the wrong one delays your DS-2019 issuance.
Ask host employers about E-Verify enrollment upfront
Designated sponsors increasingly require host employers to be E-Verify enrolled before issuing a DS-2019. Raising this in your first employer conversation filters out hosts who aren't exchange-visitor ready before you invest time in negotiations.
Map your home-country experience to U.S. job codes
The O*NET profile for Parts Clerks defines the specific tasks, tools, and knowledge areas U.S. employers expect. Aligning your CV and training plan to that profile strengthens your DS-7002 and signals to the designated sponsor that your placement is structured learning, not routine labor.

Find Parts Clerk JobsParts Clerk J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits a Parts Clerk role?
Most Parts Clerk exchange visitors enter under the J-1 Trainee category if they've completed a relevant degree or have post-graduation work experience in logistics, supply chain, or automotive services. Current post-secondary students pursuing a related field can apply under the J-1 Intern category instead. The host employer's HR structure and your career stage together determine which category your designated sponsor will approve.
Who actually sponsors my J-1 visa for a Parts Clerk position?
Your visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, such as Cultural Vistas or AIPT, not the dealership or distributor hiring you. That employer is your host. The designated sponsor reviews your training plan, issues the DS-2019 form, and monitors your placement throughout the exchange program. You find the host employer independently, then bring both parties together through the sponsor's enrollment process.
How do I find U.S. employers open to hosting a J-1 Parts Clerk?
Migrate Mate lets you search U.S. employer listings filtered by roles aligned with J-1 sponsorship, including parts and inventory positions in automotive, equipment, and manufacturing sectors. Because J-1 hosting is not the same as employer visa sponsorship, you're looking for companies familiar with exchange visitor placements and willing to sign a DS-7002 training plan alongside a designated sponsor.
Does the 2-year home residency requirement apply to Parts Clerk J-1 holders?
It depends on your country of origin and funding source. The 2-year home-country physical presence requirement under INA Section 212(e) applies if your exchange program is government-funded, your home country appears on the Exchange Visitor Skills List, or your J-1 category is designated as subject to the requirement. Your designated sponsor and the DS-2019 it issues will indicate whether the requirement applies to your specific placement.
Can I extend my J-1 program if my Parts Clerk training isn't complete?
Extensions are possible within the maximum program duration set by your J-1 category. Trainees are capped at 18 months total, while Interns are capped at 12 months. Your designated sponsor must approve the extension, and your host employer needs to document why additional training time is required. Requests should go through the sponsor before your current DS-2019 end date, not after it lapses.
