Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship as a Patient Service Coordinator
Align your credentials to specialty occupation standards
Healthcare administration roles like Patient Service Coordinator typically require documented coursework or work history in health information management, medical billing, or clinical operations. Gather transcripts and employment records before approaching any designated sponsor about program eligibility.
Distinguish Intern from Trainee program eligibility
If you're currently enrolled in a degree program, the J-1 Intern category applies. If you've graduated within the past 12 months or have relevant post-secondary work experience, you qualify for the Trainee category instead. Applying under the wrong category delays your DS-2019 issuance.
Search specifically for host employers on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter for U.S. healthcare organizations actively hosting J-1 exchange visitors in administrative roles. Host employers are the facility where you work, not the designated sponsor, so finding the right host match is your first practical step.
Request a formal training plan from your host employer
Designated sponsors require a completed Training or Internship Placement Plan before issuing your DS-2019. Ask your prospective host employer early whether they've prepared this document before, since inexperienced hosts often underestimate how detailed the competency objectives need to be.
Check whether the 2-year home residency requirement applies
Some J-1 participants in healthcare-related fields are subject to a two-year home-country residency requirement after their exchange program ends. Whether this applies depends on your nationality, funding source, and whether your field appears on the Exchange Visitor Skills List maintained by the State Department.
Verify host employer compliance standing before accepting an offer
Before signing with a host organization, confirm they've worked with a State Department-designated sponsor before and understand their obligations under the exchange visitor program. Hosts unfamiliar with DS-2019 requirements or SEVIS reporting can jeopardize your program status mid-placement.

Find Patient Service Coordinator JobsPatient Service Coordinator J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits a Patient Service Coordinator role?
Most candidates fall under the Trainee category, which covers professionals with a post-secondary degree or at least one year of work experience in health administration, medical records, or a related field. Current students completing a degree with a healthcare administration component may qualify under the Intern category instead. Your designated sponsor determines eligibility based on your specific background.
Who actually sponsors my J-1 visa for this type of role?
The visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, such as Cultural Vistas or CIEE, not your employer. The healthcare facility or clinic where you work is the host organization. The designated sponsor issues your DS-2019 form, monitors your program compliance, and reports your status to SEVIS. Your employer signs the training plan but does not sponsor the visa.
How do I find U.S. healthcare employers willing to host J-1 exchange visitors?
Not all healthcare facilities are experienced with hosting J-1 exchange visitors, so targeting the right employers from the start saves significant time. Migrate Mate lets you search for U.S. organizations in healthcare administration that have a record of working with international exchange visitors, filtering specifically for Patient Service Coordinator and related administrative roles where J-1 hosting is a realistic expectation.
Does the 2-year home residency requirement apply to healthcare administrative roles?
It can, depending on your country of nationality, whether government funding supported your exchange, and whether your field appears on the State Department's Exchange Visitor Skills List. Healthcare administration is sometimes listed for certain countries. If the requirement applies, you cannot change status to H-1B or get an immigrant visa without first returning home or obtaining a waiver from the State Department.
What documents does a host employer need to prepare before my DS-2019 can be issued?
The host employer must complete a Training or Internship Placement Plan detailing your learning objectives, supervision structure, weekly schedule, and the competencies you'll develop in the Patient Service Coordinator role. This plan goes to the designated sponsor for review before the DS-2019 is issued. Employers new to J-1 hosting often need guidance on how specific and measurable these objectives need to be.
