Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship as a Product Development Intern
Align your training plan with product disciplines
Your DS-2019 training plan must map your internship tasks to specific product development competencies like user research, prototyping, or roadmap planning. Generic job descriptions get flagged by designated sponsors during review, so work with your host employer to be precise.
Verify your enrollment or graduation timing
The J-1 Intern category requires you to be currently enrolled in a degree program or have graduated within 12 months. Confirm your eligibility window before applying, since host employers often start onboarding discussions months ahead of your actual start date.
Search Migrate Mate for J-1-compatible product roles
Use Migrate Mate to find U.S. employers actively hosting J-1 Interns in product development functions. Filtering by sponsorship type saves time compared to applying broadly and discovering late that a company has no designated sponsor relationship.
Ask host employers about their designated sponsor relationship
Not every company that posts an internship has an active relationship with a State Department-designated sponsor like CIEE, Cultural Vistas, or AIPT. Confirm this before accepting an offer, since your host cannot issue a DS-2019 on its own authority.
Request your DS-2019 at least 30 days before your start date
Designated sponsors need time to review your training plan and issue the DS-2019, which you must have before scheduling your visa interview. Delays in document review push back your entire timeline, so initiate the process as soon as your offer is confirmed.
Check whether your role triggers the two-year home residency requirement
If your J-1 funding comes from a government source or your home country appears on the State Department skills list, you may face a two-year home-country residency requirement after your program ends. USCIS cannot waive this without a separate application, so clarify your situation before you accept.

Find Product Development Intern JobsProduct Development Intern J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category applies to Product Development Intern roles?
The J-1 Intern category applies if you are currently enrolled in a post-secondary degree program abroad or have graduated within the past 12 months. If you completed your degree more than 12 months ago, the J-1 Trainee category may apply instead, provided your proposed internship relates directly to your field of study or prior professional experience in product development.
Who actually sponsors my J-1 visa for a product development internship?
Your visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, not your host employer. Organizations like Cultural Vistas, CIEE, and AIPT issue the DS-2019 form, approve your training plan, and monitor your compliance throughout the program. Your host company designs your day-to-day work but holds no authority to sponsor or issue J-1 documentation independently.
How do I find U.S. employers that host J-1 product development interns?
Use Migrate Mate to search for U.S. employers with a history of hosting J-1 exchange visitors in product and innovation roles. Many companies that run product internship programs work with designated sponsors on an ongoing basis, but this information rarely appears in standard job postings, so searching a platform built around sponsorship visibility is more efficient than filtering generic listings.
What does the training plan for a J-1 product development internship need to include?
Your training plan, typically submitted on Form DS-7002, must detail the specific learning objectives, activities, and supervision structure for your placement. For product development, this means naming concrete phases such as competitive research, wireframing, sprint participation, or go-to-market analysis. Vague descriptions like 'assist the product team' are routinely rejected by designated sponsors during their review process.
Does the two-year home residency requirement affect J-1 product development interns?
It can. If your J-1 program is funded by your home government, a U.S. government agency, or your home country appears on the State Department's Exchange Visitor Skills List, you must return home for two years before changing to most other U.S. visa statuses. Check the State Department's skills list against your home country before accepting a J-1 placement, since USCIS cannot override this requirement without a formal waiver process.
