Document your production training objectives clearly
Your DS-2019 requires a structured training plan detailing the production control skills you'll develop, such as scheduling, inventory tracking, and ERP systems. Vague objectives get flagged by designated sponsors during the review process.
Target manufacturers with formal trainee host agreements
Not every production facility is set up to host J-1 trainees. Prioritize mid-size and large manufacturers in automotive, aerospace, or consumer goods sectors, where HR teams regularly coordinate with designated sponsors on training plan documentation.
Use Migrate Mate to identify J-1-compatible production roles
Search for Production Control Clerk positions on Migrate Mate, which surfaces roles at U.S. employers aligned with J-1 sponsorship. Filtering by industry helps you find host companies already familiar with the Trainee program's operational requirements.
Verify your program category matches your career stage
If you're within one year of graduating, the Intern category applies. If you've completed your degree and have relevant work experience, the Trainee category fits. Applying under the wrong category causes DS-2019 delays or denials.
Confirm the host employer understands OFLC wage requirements
Your compensation must meet the prevailing wage for production control occupations in the host employer's county. Use the OFLC Wage Search to verify the rate before accepting an offer, so the training plan passes designated sponsor review.
Clarify whether your role triggers the two-year home residency requirement
J-1 Trainees funded by their home government or working in a field on the Exchange Visitor Skills List may face a two-year home residency requirement before changing to other U.S. visa categories. Confirm your status with your designated sponsor before signing an offer.

Find Production Control Clerk JobsProduction Control Clerk J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits a Production Control Clerk role?
The Trainee category applies if you've completed a post-secondary degree or vocational credential in a related field and have at least one year of relevant work experience. If you're currently enrolled and seeking practical experience, the Intern category covers you instead. Both require a structured training plan approved by a State Department-designated sponsor before any work begins.
Who actually sponsors the J-1 visa for a production control placement?
The visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, such as Cultural Vistas or AIPT, not the manufacturing facility where you work. That facility is the host employer. The designated sponsor issues your DS-2019, signs off on your training plan, and monitors your placement for regulatory compliance throughout the program.
How can I find U.S. employers offering Production Control Clerk roles compatible with J-1 sponsorship?
Search on Migrate Mate, which surfaces production and operations roles at U.S. companies aligned with J-1 sponsorship. Because not every employer has an existing relationship with a designated sponsor, focusing on manufacturers in sectors with established trainee programs, such as automotive or industrial equipment, increases your chances of a placement that can move through the DS-2019 process smoothly.
Can a Production Control Clerk J-1 placement lead to an H-1B afterward?
J-1 status does not confer any preference for H-1B selection, and if your placement triggers the two-year home residency requirement, you must satisfy that obligation before changing to H-1B or most other immigrant visa categories. Check whether your home country appears on the Exchange Visitor Skills List and whether your funding source involves your home government before planning any long-term U.S. career path.
What does the training plan need to include for a production control J-1 placement?
The training plan must outline specific competencies you'll develop, the schedule for rotating through production control functions such as inventory management, demand forecasting, and ERP system operation, and measurable performance benchmarks. Designated sponsors reject plans that read as regular employment descriptions rather than structured learning programs. Your host employer prepares the plan, but the designated sponsor must approve and sign it before USCIS issues your visa.
