Today, this includes going into individual homes as well as partnering with senior living communities to coordinate and manage clinical gaps for these seniors, their caregivers, and the care ecosystem. Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship in Registered Land Surveyor
Verify your credential equivalency before applying
U.S. licensing boards require foreign surveying credentials to meet state-specific standards. Research whether your national qualification maps to a Licensed Land Surveyor designation before approaching host employers, since mismatches can delay your training plan approval.
Target host employers with active J-1 history
Civil engineering firms, municipal survey departments, and land development consultancies regularly host J-1 Trainees. Use Migrate Mate to identify U.S. employers in those sectors who have demonstrated openness to exchange visitor placements in technical roles.
Match your program category to your career stage
The J-1 Trainee category fits candidates within one year of completing a surveying degree or with less than one year of post-graduation experience. Professionals with more experience qualify for the Specialist category, which carries different DS-2019 requirements and training plan structures.
Build a training plan aligned with surveying fieldwork
Your designated sponsor requires a detailed Training or Internship Placement Plan (Form DS-7002) before issuing a DS-2019. Outline specific field tasks, software systems like CAD or GIS platforms, and measurable milestones that reflect actual surveying workflows, not generic professional development language.
Confirm the 2-year home residency rule applies to you
Surveyors sponsored under certain government-funded or skills-shortage categories may face a two-year home-country residency requirement after their J-1 ends. Check your DS-2019 for a 212(e) notation before accepting a host employer offer, since it affects any future U.S. visa plans.
Clarify who files what before your start date
Your host employer signs the DS-7002 and coordinates with your designated sponsor, but USCIS is not involved in J-1 issuance. The sponsor issues the DS-2019, and you use it to apply at a U.S. consulate. Misunderstanding this sequence often delays start dates by weeks.

Find Registered Land Surveyor JobsRegistered Land Surveyor J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category applies to Registered Land Surveyors?
Most foreign-trained land surveyors enter on the J-1 Trainee category if they are within one year of completing their surveying degree or have under one year of post-degree experience. Those with more substantial professional experience qualify for the Specialist category. Both require a host employer to co-sign a formal training plan before the designated sponsor can issue a DS-2019.
Who actually sponsors my J-1 visa as a land surveyor?
The visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, such as Cultural Vistas or AIPT, not your hiring employer. That organization reviews your training plan, issues the DS-2019 form, and monitors your program compliance. The engineering firm or survey company that hires you is the host organization, a legally distinct role from the sponsor.
How do I find U.S. surveying employers open to hosting J-1 exchange visitors?
Civil engineering firms, county assessor offices, land development companies, and infrastructure consultancies are common host employers for J-1 surveyors. Use Migrate Mate to search for roles at U.S. employers in those sectors who have indicated openness to exchange visitor placements, which narrows your outreach to realistic targets rather than cold applications.
Does the two-year home residency requirement affect land surveyors?
It can. If your J-1 program was funded by your home government, if surveying is on your country's skills-shortage list, or if your DS-2019 carries a 212(e) annotation, you must return home for two years before applying for most U.S. work visas or a green card. Confirm this before accepting a host employer offer, since it affects your long-term U.S. career path.
What does the DS-7002 training plan need to cover for a surveying role?
The DS-7002 must describe specific, measurable activities tied to land surveying practice: boundary determination methods, GPS and total station fieldwork, GIS data management, CAD drafting workflows, and any state licensing exam preparation. Generic descriptions like 'professional development' are routinely rejected by designated sponsors. Your host employer signs the form alongside the sponsor before your DS-2019 is issued.
