Frame your SAP modules as training objectives
Your DS-2019 training plan must map specific SAP skills to measurable objectives. Document which modules you'll work in, such as SAP S/4HANA, FI, or MM, and tie each to a defined learning milestone your host employer can verify.
Verify your category before approaching employers
If you're currently enrolled in a degree program, you qualify for the J-1 Intern category. Post-graduation professionals with a relevant degree or five years of related experience apply under Trainee. Presenting the wrong category to a host employer wastes time for both sides.
Search for J-1-aligned roles on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter U.S. SAP Business Analyst positions by employers familiar with exchange visitor placements. It surfaces roles where the host organization has structured J-1-compatible training environments, saving you from cold outreach that goes nowhere.
Target consulting firms with SAP practice units
Consulting firms that run dedicated SAP implementation practices, such as those serving enterprise ERP clients, regularly host J-1 trainees because project-based work maps cleanly onto the structured training plan format that designated sponsors require.
Confirm the host employer will sign the training plan
The designated sponsor issues your DS-2019, but your host employer must co-sign the training plan and commit to supervision. Clarify this before accepting any offer. A host that hesitates to document supervisory responsibilities is unlikely to satisfy sponsor compliance requirements.
Check whether your role triggers the two-year rule
The J-1 two-year home residency requirement applies if your program is government-funded or if your home country lists your occupation as in short supply. SAP expertise can appear on such lists. Confirm your status with your designated sponsor before signing a training agreement.

Find SAP Business Analyst JobsSAP Business Analyst J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category applies to SAP Business Analyst roles?
It depends on your career stage. If you're a currently enrolled student or a recent graduate within the required timeframe, the J-1 Intern category applies. If you hold a relevant degree and have at least one year of professional experience, or have five or more years of SAP-related work history without a degree, the J-1 Trainee category is the correct fit.
Who actually sponsors my J-1 visa for a U.S. SAP role?
Your visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, such as Cultural Vistas, CIEE, or AIPT. They issue your DS-2019 and oversee compliance with exchange visitor program rules. The company where you work is your host employer, not your visa sponsor. Many applicants conflate the two, which creates problems during the offer and filing stages.
What does the training plan need to include for an SAP Business Analyst placement?
Your training plan must specify the SAP modules and business analysis activities you'll be trained in, the supervision structure, measurable phase goals, and a timeline. Designated sponsors will not issue a DS-2019 without a detailed, signed training plan. Generic job descriptions that don't reference the structured learning component are routinely rejected during sponsor review.
How do I find U.S. employers open to hosting J-1 trainees in SAP roles?
Use Migrate Mate to identify U.S. employers and SAP Business Analyst positions where host organizations have experience working with exchange visitors. Cold outreach to employers unfamiliar with the J-1 structure often stalls because the host has never signed a training plan or coordinated with a designated sponsor before.
Does the two-year home residency requirement affect SAP Business Analysts?
It can. The requirement applies if your J-1 program receives U.S. government or home-country government funding, or if your home country has designated your occupation as a skill in short supply. SAP and IT skills appear on some countries' exchange visitor skills lists. Your designated sponsor must assess this before issuing your DS-2019, and you should ask directly rather than assuming you're exempt.
